Mysterious files inside Starcraft MPQs?

Post by MrFlibble »

While browsing through Starcraft-related stuff on the Net, I've found this document, which appears to be a master list for files inside Starcraft MPQs - retail, BroodWar and shareware demo as well. The thing is, it mentions some files that are absent from my SC disks, or at least not recognized by MPQ2k when it creates the list files. These are files like
campaign\protoss\protoss01\staredit\wav\P0B00ufe.wav
campaign\protoss\protoss01\staredit\wav\P0B01ufe.wav
campaign\zerg\zerg08\staredit\wav\ZergEndCommunication.wav
campaign\zerg\zerg08\staredit\wav\ZergStartCommunication.wav.
Are they from other (later? earlier?) releases of Starcraft or what? I'm confused.

I believe the original SC CD had some files that were later removed, don't quote me on that though. And I'm sure the demo had some files no longer found in retail. I know a lot of unused dialogue and maps were left in the CDs.

The problem is that the files on my Starcraft CD are dated January-March 1998, and with Starcraft released in April 1998, I've got the very first, initial release. It would be logical for the obsolete game files to be missing from later releases, but vice versa doesn't seem feasible to me.

Could the campaign files be included with the SC public beta (not accessible from the game itself, but still)?

Patch your disc could have removed them, try installing sc over again and not patching it at all and see what you can find :)

AFAIK, Starcraft patches do not modify the original data files like StarDat.mpq or BrooDat.mpq - all updated files are stored within Patch_rt.mpq. Besides, I was talking about the install.exe files (the ones which contain all campaign missions, sounds and music), which are located on the SC and BW CDs and could not be modified in general unless compied to the HD (a feature introduced only with the latest SC patch).

The matter could be cleared if more info on different SC releases were obtained. Although adding obsolete files to later releases seems unlikely, as I stated above, they could slip into later re-releases or even different language versions of the game.

BTW, I haven't heard about any Starcraft file leaks from Blizzard prior to its release, but maybe there have been any?

EDIT: I've compiled a list of files missing from my vanilla CD. See attachment.
