Modding game suggestion: Battle For Wesnoth

Post by Demoneater »

Huhu,
I just wanted to point you guys (especially RCX :P) to the game The Battle For Wesnoth. it is a turn-based strategy games, but you surely want to ask WHY you should mod this game. Here are my points:

- The game is totally free
- The game is totally free software/open-source (So if you like open software, you can distribute/support it by using it)
- It ihas been developed some time ago and has thus quite few to none bugs
- Now one if not the most important point: As it is open-source, you can edit almost EVERYTHING since you just can change the source code a bit (But this isn't really necessary for most changes I suppose since the game comes also with an editor)
- It has been released for MAC OS X, Windows and Linux. You can reach a lot of people with it and the VERY MOST people have the chance to play it without having to buy/install another OS. Hence, you can even play it at your I-Phone or cell phone if I am not mistaken!
(OK, at leats WC3 (don't know about SC II) does run pretty good at linux and iirc also at Mac)
- There are also translations forums where are people who translate campagins & maps, so you can reach even more people without having to translate it by yourself!

The concept of the game isn't such bad in my opinion, but I unfortanlly didn't find campaigns with such a superb storyline like WOS yet. :(
So please create one :P

That's a very cute looking game.  I remember those turn based strategy games, though its been so long since I played one myself.

I was going to scoff like I usually do but actually from the screenshots it looks mildly interesting. Unfortunately the base graphics are so small that I think LoL exports would be out of the question. I also know nothing of the engine or image arrangements so I think I'll save myself the trouble and stick to AoW2.

i downloaded this game a couple of months back. was quite impressed by the number of fanmade material (campaigns, mainly) for this game.

reason i stopped playing it and lost interest is because i can't really relate to the fantasy/dark ages genre. it's even more alien to me than space adventures! :P

Have to say I prefer it over sci fi. Not many people can make good sci fi these days. At least not for PC.

sci fi ain't what it used to be, right? :)

it's apparently really hard to make a believable and fun story set in space. i get a feeling we've seen it all. nothing's original anymore and people tend to back away from alien invasions.

at least the fantasy genre doesn't demand originality, which is probably why people keep playing and reading it. there's always gonna be princesses to rescue or dragons to slay or curses to lift or evil wizards to incapacitate. modern sci fi is basically the same as fantasy but with a different scenery.

fantasy may work better for most people. i just don't like it.

It depends. Either genre sees ridiculously overused tropes. But I find that some people have an easier time pulling off of a good Fantasy story than Sci fi. Perhaps that is because as you say; the existing elements that are often used aren't quite as old for me yet. That and I find that when it comes to making original elements sci-fi writers fail the hardest. I have yet to find an alien race in a sci fi that genuinely makes me fear them or characters that have any real depth to them. Fantasy tends to be a bit more close and character-oriented, so the pressure to make the characters more believable is much higher and thus the writer is pressured to make better characters.

That's not always the case, but that's how I feel about it. My writing almost always mixes both sci-fi and fantasy.

Has anyone wondered why all the alien species in Sci Fi are humanoid?  (There are a few exceptions)  They could at least come up with something truly unique.
As the size of the explosion increases, the number of social situations it can not solve approaches zero.

"No more humans, please."

I know humanoids are more sympathetic and easier to implement in stories, but the improbability of humanoid life is staggering. Humans even more so; the independent evolution of humans on another planet is exceedingly unlikely. Do yourself and the community a favor by avoiding trope races, including humans.

In terms of television or film, CGI can be expensive and we do have an abundance of human actors on this planet of ours.  Also, like Sreq said, it's easier for us to relate to something that looks human.

While I do prefer non-humanoid aliens, I am pretty forgiving of humanoid aliens.  Like you said: it's easier to relate to something that's more human looking.  Then again, I managed to make a surprisingly sympathetic alien who basically amounted to a cyborg eyeball with tentacles in an old comic of mine, so it can't be that hard.

Otherwise, yeah.  I agree with you in the sense that it would be nice to see something more alien and less human.

I've actually downloaded BFW and I have to say, its pretty fun. The main stories are interesting, you can mod the multi-player part of the game to have different ages, and the map editor is easy to use. I haven't touched the coding yet, but from what I've seen, it's pretty in-depth.

The all of custom stuff in this game is made by WML (Wesnoth Markup Language) and some effects are done by lua. For me, I downloaded this game in about a year (or more) ago and by now I know only basics of WML (I tried to do some simple easy crappy stuff and it worked)

At one point in Seg 3 of ToA, one of the Zelconian scientists (Crionus) remarks about how she was studying a race who called themselves Humans. In our timeline, this was around the time of Rome. She studied them for a long time and was performing experiments on them (against the knowledge of her superiors).

The Scitor appeared at around year 2001 and pretty much glassed the planet after eating everyone in a day's time.

LOL NO MORE HUMANS? U GOT YER WISH BRO

(A the same time I also justify the existence of humanoid races very neatly.)
