[RESOURCE] Doomageddon Model Pack (GRPs) -- Many pictures!

Post by New-/Hydrolisk »

(Original thread on ModCrafters.)

--

Awesome Introduction for CC

Awesome, my first topic on CC. I can recognize a few people. Ardis, with his Iron Wars mod (glad to see it still alive, was just about it test it out). IskatuMesk is hanging around - very cool. Bajadulce, awesome, glad to see he's still hanging aroundt he SC community (was just lurking on of his threads). I found that a thread in which someone was asking about multiple turrets, which reminded me of a unit I made that could unleash up to 4 weapons at once (which wasn't actually too difficult). Anyways, I'm just ranting now.

SO, after seeing a lot of IskatuMesk's old (really old, ITAS old) models, I felt like I really wanted to do some modelling, make a few GRPs, that stuff. Then, I found Polaris' modelling tutorial for Wings3D. Thus, I started to make 3D models (not that I can - my models can't compare at all with Mesk's stuff, WarGiant included).
And then, to make a long story short, I was a cheap bastard and got Polaris to render my models (some of which I did some additional tweaking). Corbo rendered one or two (or three) models too.
After I amassed a small collection of half-decent models, I decided to release this pack. So I did. On ModCrafters and SEN. I tried to post a thread on SC.Org (but their thread policies seem pretty dumb, I still haven't seen my thread go up), and then, I remembered this place! Derp, though I only lurked here once in a while.

Anyway, I hope you guys find some use for this model pack.

Hello world!

Polaris and I bring you a new 3D model pack!
I modelled them while Polaris rendered them. (although I think Corbo did one or two, also! xD ) Anyway, thanks to all those who helped out!

(I used Wings3D v1.2 in order to model the thangs.)

This model pack includes 6 spacecrafts, 2 tanks, and 1 (big) missile.
It also includes the source models (in *.wings format).
Actual models:

GRP previews: (missing Giant Missile)

Feel free to modify the models! Just make sure you credit us as the makers of the original thangs, ja? And you have to release the modifications under the same license!

Closing Notes
I hope to continue modelling these thangs, so that StarCraft modders everywhere (and people in general) have more 3D GRPS/models to use.
I think that most SC modders don't use 3D models rendered into GRPs because most of them don't really fit in StarCraft, amongst all the normal and kitbashed units. But, I feel that if I can saturate the need for various models, then style and conformation needs will be satisfied, and more 3D models will be used as GRPs.
Simply put, I hope to start a 3D model movement, so that "looking right" is no longer a great issue.
I think it can be done, especially since IskatuMesk has already released a large number of 3D models, too.
Unfortunately, due to my own inadequate skills in modelling and animating, I will mostly be producing these "static" models. :(
Maybe we will see a surge in fleet mods?

I hope you find these models satisfy your needs.

gl hf!

Most custom models are static, but that's better than nothing, Hydro, thanks for the contribution, I'm sure it'll be viewed and used being on here.

I'm curious about the modeling techniques you used for #2 and #3 as they are considerably more impressive than anything I've modeled to date.

Thanks for the welcome/comments!

About modeling techniques for 2 and 3: I can't really say anything about "modeling techniques," since I don't think I completely understand what that means (I read don't know anything about 3D modeling). Presently, I'm interpreting it as methods I've used frequently for those two. (And I really doubt I can give a satisfactory answer right now.)
I would say the two most common features would be what I call "inset-inset-out-extrude" and collapsing faces into single vertices, making spikes. For the first, what I do is select a face, inset it twice, select the faces that make a ring between the outer most faces (from the first inset) and the remainder face, and then extrude the ring. I repeat this to make ridges. I think all I really need to do is inset, extrude, inset, and then extrude inwards, repeat, though.
The last thing I can recall is making the coolant pipes. I inset a long face once, take its long edges, split them into a number of vertices, and then connect them, to make a bunch of cells/squares, and then extrude those.

I used quite a bit of cutting and connecting to get some of the shapes. The pentagrams were tricky, since I had to flip them around and stuff.

I can only say that experimented around and thought that making ridges was fun. I guess I could mentioning flattening too.
Errr, anyway, I hope that I have answered your question/sated your curiosity. I don't think I could say much more about 2 and 3 without knowing more specifically what you're curious about.

well you confused me something fierce with that last bit so ^______^

I suck at modeling, especially figuring out how to use stuff to make stuff, so ehh. Pretty much everything is a mystery.
