Video issues with SC... (New video card too advanced for SC?)

Post by Ardis »

Okay, so I recently bought a new video card for my computer, a Zotac GeForce 9500GT and I've only had one issue with it so far, but it's the most irritating one since I can't seem to fix it without possibly having to reinstall Windows XP.

Anyways, for some reason when Starcraft is running (no other game seems to have the problem that I've found.) My video gets rather goofy and nothing I can think of makes it go away. The most curios part about this problem is that it doesn't get caught in the screenshots, meaning is happening somewhere between the video card and monitor and only happens when SC is running.

I've only got a few possible solutions for this:
-Possible defect in the video card that only shows when running in 256 or the low resolution SC runs in, possibly try to return it for a new one.
-Maybe a problem with Windows XP since I switched from an XFX Radeon HD 4350. Perhaps something in Windows didn't like me changing it from an ATI to an NVIDIA video card and I might have to reinstall Windows.
-Perhaps the Geforce 9500GT chipset is in fact too advanced for Starcraft? If you think about it, something like this was bound to happen one day, no one is going to support older games forever, heck, I can't even run my Star Wars: TIE Fighter collector's edition CD on XP.

The attached file isn't a real screenshot of it, rather a lazy attempt to recreate what the problem I'm having looks like. And the thinner lines are running down and disappearing near the bottom... Very odd.

EDIT:Never mind... I found the problem. Something called "Write Combining" apparently doesn't agree with Starcraft. Anyone else who has this issue should also look into this:
Display Properties > Settings > Advanced > Troubleshoot. You'll find a little check box at the bottom called "Write combining" and it even says in the description that it can mess up graphics on certain programs.

EDIT2: Not "Write combining" after all, it's the hardware acceleration. I turned down the hardware acceleration a little and it works fine now.

I'm not unstable.
Unstable implies that I could BECOME more dangerous than I am now.

Do you have the latest Nvidia drivers?

Is this windows 7? If so, does running the desktop resolution dialogue in the background fix it?
Gameproc

Found it, it was a setting that apparently doesn't like SC.

And no, I am sticking with Windows XP until I see the need to upgrade. And yes, I am using the latest video drivers for my video card.
