They were fired so Activision wouldn't have to pay them a huge upcoming royalty payment.

The time of termination for them is a rather comical one, yes, but insubordination is a very serious charge. If the two of them were suspected of it, there was likely very good reason because it isn't exactly the easiest thing to prove.
Either way, fantastic story! I hate Infinity Ward and CoD. Never has a shooter presented such a large example of how little innovation there is in the genre these days.

Apparently the IW heads were planning on leaving the studio and starting a new one with the intent of taking many of the important senior developers with them. Activision caught wind and fired them before giving them royalties. This all was a dispute between IW and Activision because Activision wanted IW to get to work on MW3 but IW wanted to work on a new IP.

Well, we definitely knew IW wasn't blameless in all this. When you commit to making half a dozen formulaic FPS games with a publisher considered one of the worst only behind Interplay and EA, you've made your bed at some point in that roller coaster of free money.

If this is the case, that's a pretty solid reason to fire them.wibod wrote: Apparently the IW heads were planning on leaving the studio and starting a new one with the intent of taking many of the important senior developers with them. Zampella and West filed their complaints earlier today, they're accusing Activision of forcing them to rush out products and do tons of overtime. Zampella and West feel like Activision went back on their word of allowing IW to develop games free of publisher meddling, and that's when they wanted to leave. I think it also accuses them of basically saying go do MW3 now no vacation for you guys.
Also the CoD series has made 3billion dollars.
