You just... don't... do it.
Many people think it's just a game and nothing more, they don't care. They should. And MUST. You don't play with fans' loyalty, much less their stupidity. Specially young gamers. These gamers are mentally delayed folks, they're people with a refined mental poverty. These kinds of people accept anything new, treating old things like outdated garbage.
Ok, now you're asking, what the fuck am I talking about? Command & Conquer 4.
http://www.gametrailers.com/video/exclusive-mechanics-command/58968#comments_top
In this game, it's the old bullshit of build and destroy stuff, sugared only by promises and more promises, of an innovative gameplay. In this case, it's the new crawler system, mobile MCV's that spawn units out. The whole game forgets resource mining, other buildings and superweapons just to focus around this bullshit, this "more focused micromanagement" game. Anyways, for those who remember, C&C was about base building, picking something and send it blowing others sky high, mining cash... etc, etc. But that was back in Westwood ruling days.
So, today, when Eletronic Arts took over the series, they decide to try something different. Now, you have only this large piece of crap as building and command center that can move anywhere it wants to, you don't get to mine anything and I don't know how you get more funding, there's no powers to help you and, terrible news for everyone, it's all divided in three tech trees that doesn't make sense. The end.
Oh, even the best, caring people like Guerrilla or Blizzard know you don't make this "stunt". Now stands the idea for several newbs out there that build and destroy for the Command & Conquer series is obsolete! Yes, I know, Browder told that the old campaign skirmish formula just doesn't attract people's interest anymore in the Development Logs, I saw that!
But there's one thing: What can be seen by some in EA like a new approach is taken by many easy-to-convert fans as reality. And the first of these truths is "this is the game". That's not true, C&C always remained as a build-and-destroy game and attracted millions of fans through the world. But this is not told, it shows the impressions, for the weak minded, that, in fact, you don't need a grounded building to spawn an absurdly large walker or a fat tank the size of a square. All of this coming out of a small walker??? Yea, well, that's the idea for C&C 4. And, not only it's a downfall of an iconic from-the-roots series, but also a serious disrespect to every fan who payed their hard-earned funds for it!
I'm here, gamers who don't believe in such things, to say certain things don't need to change. Even this idea shouldn't be discarded, it could work in another game, or even a mod! But, no, sticking to old ideals is an inconvenience for EA, it's better to go all-new, much less concerns with everything, gameplay included!

I always thought Westwood was a terrible company. But compared to EA, they're the Black Isle of RTS gaming.
I mean, it's EA. What are you expecting? For them to not throw millions of dollars at hollywood washouts and piss all over overworked high school dropouts to churn out the latest steaming pile of horse shit?

I could care less about Command and Conquer. They never cared about porting to Macs like Blizzard did. So I played StarCraft instead of Red Alert, and WarCraft instead of Tiberian Sun. Good riddance their discrimination was just a factor to their overall lameness resulting in the demise of a popular series.
Oh, and you know it's going to be bad when they title the game Tiberian TWILIGHT! Edward in a tank! lolz!

Re: You just... don't... do it.
The idea is that previous games that used the older methods didn't do well commercially, so its assumed that isn't what people want. You vote with your dollars, so does everyone else.
The series stopped being relevant with Tiberium Sun.

Now with 50% more lol, 50% more win, and 100% phlail.

I think it was also because Westwood diverged away from its original formula which was "What if we had a game that had the real US and NATO countries fighting the real USSR and Warsaw Pact countries?" into more sci-fi territory that was already well held by Starcraft as well as other titles. The "What If?" real tech thing has worked out very well for Infinity Ward (especially last weekend), even as they sort of skirt the border into futuristic stuff because they knew how to handle the balancing act while EA just threw money at C & C 3 (nearly a million with much of it going to those actors).
C & C 4 is going to get trumped by Starcraft 2, and EA knows it. So it's going for the casual easy-RTS gamers who are curious about hardcore RTS games but just plain stink at them and then it'll be forgotten when the better products come out.

That trailer is hilarious, the units look bad, the gameplay looks bland and the whole thing looks like some arcade style game for iphone or something...

EARN EXPERIENCE. UPGRADE YOUR TROOPS. MOUSE-BASED TROOP MOVEMENT. GENERIC FEATURE.
Yeah, usually big bold "OMG" type is reserved for something significantly different. Not some weak ass game feature that's already been done in RTS's. Ah well, I try not to judge the CnC series, I've never been able to play through their campaigns due to my limited patience with RTS's. After StarCraft, I became a bit spoiled. It's like the first time you fall in love. No woman, no matter who she is, will ever make you feel the same as the first.

Re: You just... don't... do it.
The C&C3 campaign is the epicenter of the fail. I got fed up just in the first 2-3 missions because every few seconds the game would hijack your camera, focus on one of your buildings, and give you a huge speech about this building and then sit there for another minute focused on this building.
YEAH OK I KNOW WHAT A FUCKING BARRACKS DOES
And the acting was so bad. EA prides themselves in their live-action briefings with hollywood actors but you can tell they're all washouts (RA3 was basically EA bragging "Hey look, we hired an ex-porn star!" over and over again) and are utterly terrible.

You also don't want an ex-porn actor to be your commanding officer. Usually and unless it's Ron Jeremy.

Lol I can't take CnC seriously anymore, red alert 1 and 2 were cool but I didn't really pay attention after that
¯\_(ツ)_/¯
