Campaign: Alastair Reynolds' Chasm City

Post by coko »

Hi,

I used to be a more active forum member for this site and a number of others a while ago. But I never wrote a campaign. I am a huge fan of Alastair Reynolds'  Revelation Space Universe, and thought while reading Chasm City for the fourth time it could be turned into a very enjoyable campaign.

First off though I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of copyright problems I could have? My thought is that as long as I maintain this is based on his Books and Universe I should be able to avoid problems.

Still returning back to the campaign, I will shortly be graduating from University and looking for a job during the credit crunch so I expect to have a lot of free time. I have decided to make this for Starcraft 2, so nothing to show yet. First I'll look to convert the main parts of the books into game chapters.

Due to the nature of the book the gameplay will be linear,  but I hope to add in many smaller side missions, some funny, some useful and some linked to the wider Revelation Space Universe. The main gameplay will be focus around a couple of characters, as the game is about a certain individual, but also has a huge amount devouted to flashbacks which provide the background to the character and the situation. Still as it is a couple of characters at most it will focus around their improvements and choices, including a focus on investigation and subterfuge. I will look to include more RTS style parts with some of the flashbacks, and simulations.

What I will look for from you guys is at first some beta testers when I start the first missions, later possibly voice artists to provide a little bit more to the games polish, and finally for you all to play it when it is finished.

I hope to have a rough guide to how many missions I will have and the general play of each of them after two months. Hopefully by the end of the year the game will be reaching its finish. The main point of this topic was to say hello, get mini feedback from anyone that had read the books, and start to build up a possible list of helpers in the future.

Information can be found by reading any of his books, with the focus on http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chasm_City , though the precussor's will help provide a better backdrop to the storyline.

Technically, all fan fiction is in violation of copyright law. Such violations tend to go ignored, though, so long as the infringement isn't being profitted on. Fan work helps act as free advertising, but even when non-profit authors and companies may still demand a "Cease and Desist" when such fan work risks confusing customers. For instance, a mod that uses "Expansion" in its title is likely to get shut down because the company doesn't want consumers mistaking the mod as an official game expansion. A copyright holder might also shut down fan work that could create competition in addition to confusion. Notable examples include Infoceptor's Warcraft mod for Starcraft when Warcraft III was in preparation for release, or when a Halo-based RTS mod was shut down shortly before Bungie announced Halo Wars.

Herc, thanks for the reply.

Well, I'm slowly considering many features, presently I've really been thinking about simulations throughout all the game with choice of difficulty that will provide the RTS feel, with a more FF feel for the general gameplay.

Towards the copyright, I'll just state what I can saying I have based it on this book, and hopefully go under the radar!
