For megaman, the very first I did play was Megaman 2 although I did play the first one eventually. It had that useless score on the middle top of the screen. Good they removed it from Megaman 2 and onwards.

Then I think it was Megaman 4 or Megaman 5 that they introduced the Mega Buster, another fine addon since it was annoying to continually push the attack button back then but it could be arguable that before it did lead to more enemy weapon use rather than the default one but I always preferred a infinite ammo standard issue gun charged up. Just always had a distaste for rather limited ammo on other weapons.

Then in the X series, it's now that they introduced the Dash move, made the game overall quicker and more intense. That's when I became even more interested. Also liked to find X's parts and such.

Then in Megaman X4, it's when Zero truly became playable (he was in X3 but in a kind of a cheap way) bringing some swordplay to make it different from the usual gunplay. A nice touch to be able to finish levels + find almost all to all things with Zero as well.

Then Z series, Zero as the main character, they leave a gun weapon for more X hardcore fans although the Z Blade was better overall for the Z series. Although I did find it cheap to add the weaknesses system as just a plain ice/lightning/fire-like addon for your weapons.

ZX series, tried it a bit, while more freedom to explore areas can be nice but it's annoying to move from one place to another even if there are some teleporters there and there. Maybe I am a bit too much of a "stage mission" purist.

I loved the X series... I just wish they put the same care into all the games.  While X1 and X2 were delightful, X3 just felt... forced.  Something about it never felt right.  They came back again gloriously with X4, which may just be my favorite game in the series, but then it was followed up by X5 and X6, which seemed lacking in heart.  X7, the title in which they attempted 3D, fell flat on its face for the most part.  Thankfully, they made it for it by successfully making X8 awesome.  Though there are two painful "vehicle stages," the rest of the game is pretty sweet.

I think you owe it to yourself to scour your nearby used-game store and correct this tragedy.

My favorites were the early X series, I had fun playing those on super nintendo and an emulator :)

I've never really played Final Fantasy though, don't know why.

Well that explains why you've always been the Black Sheep of this family.

I loved X8, they actually made all three characters useful in that game. X and Zero wavered between weak and overpowered in several games, but this time they made Axl actually useful (he sucked the big one in X7). I would like to play Maverick Hunter X for the PSP one day if only to see what playing as Vile is like, but I don't plan to get a PSP anytime in the near future, much less for one game.

For someone who hasn't played Megaman at all, or can't recall- What games should they go with in terms of order?

While I quickly threw Axl aside in X7, he was always part of my team in X8.  Go go, Axl and Zero!

Yeah... not only were all the characters useful, but unique to each other as well.  From the bosses, X gets his usual copied abilities, Zero gets his neato sword techniques, and Axl gets a new kind of gun (which don't even use up any energy to fire, right?  They're just like new weapons to switch to).

...Dang it, now I'm going to have to go play it again.

What do you mean?  Chronological order?  Difficulty?  Or just good titles for newcomers to jump in at?

Something to understand the story if any.

There is no real story in any of the Megaman game and it doesn't matter a bit in the grand scheme of things. The story is just an excuse of why your characters battle some evil guys more than anything. In other words, you could skip all the story and you will still get the most enjoyment from the gameplay.

As for starting it, if you prefer more old-style and simple platform gameplay, try the old Megaman series (Megaman 1 to 6 on the NES, 7 on SNES and not sure about the rest).

If you prefer more quick reflexes and action-oriented platform gameplay, the Megaman X series is the way to go (Megaman X 1 to 3 on the SNES, X4 to X6 on the PS1, X7 and X8 on the PS2).

The Megaman Zero series is a bit less on quick reflexes but is much harder overall (espacially if you want a S or A Rank). Megaman Zero 1 to 4 on the GBA.

EDIT :

Here's some youtube videos to give you an idea about the differences while trying to avoid any "real spoilers" :

If you wanted to get into the series, I'd go rent/buy the Megaman X collection. It's MMX 1-6, and a lot of people tend to prefer X over classic Mega Man.

As far as story goes... In Mega Man 1-8 (and 9, I guess), you have Dr. Light who made Mega Man and Dr. Wiley who makes eight evil robot masters (6 in the very first one). You kill the robots, and you beat Wiley, and then you rinse and repeat until the series ends. It was more loved for the gameplay than the story.

And that's about all there is to the original series.

In Mega Man X, there's actually a decent amount of plot when you add all the games together. Nothing real deep, but it's there.
