Re: 2012
The Mayans actually had a pretty damn good calender system, if I recall correctly. And the reason that it ends at 2012 is because that's when some epic astrological cycle will be complete. All sorts of things in the galaxy will be lining up and being nice and neat. And it's not so much that the world would end, just that their obscenely large scale calender would reset. Or something like that.Thalraxal wrote: The Mayans also believed that the world might end every 52 years, I'm not trusting any doomsday prophecies based on their stuff.
Oh wait no, now I remember. It's actually when they predict that the earth will break in half. Hm, my mistake. Also the end is near.

Historians don't find people's thoughts that the Mayas just HAPPEN to know when the cycle would complete to be a likely answer, they find it as a coincidence.Mr. wrote:The Mayans actually had a pretty damn good calender system, if I recall correctly. Re: 2012
I just can't worry about 2012. Through the ages people has been thinking that the end of the world will come, sooner or later., like in 1000. Why would the Earth be destroyed just because some planets are in one line?

The Mayans had an incredibly accurate calendar, great for predicting all kinds of astronomical stuff. Just not so good at predicting doomsdays.Mr. wrote:The Mayans actually had a pretty damn good calender system, if I recall correctly. Actually, historians aren't even sure what the Mayans thought about 2012. All this cosmological convergence, world altering whatever and doomsday is all modern interpretations of a date on the Mayan Calendar. But considering the obsession the Mayans and their successors had with the end of the world, chances are it'd be much the same.

Re: 2012
The prophecies are right - everything we know it will end in 2012.
Therefore, those of you who acknowledge this reality should transfer all your belongings to my bank account, since you won't be needing them anyway. You have until January 1st, 2012 to do it, so take your time.
On an unrelated note, a zombie apocalypse would be awesome.
