The world was supposedly also ending in 2000. There is always some kind of end coming. I do like the debate though about how and why.

The Mayans also believed that the world might end every 52 years, I'm not trusting any doomsday prophecies based on their stuff.

The Mayans actually had a pretty damn good calender system, if I recall correctly.  And the reason that it ends at 2012 is because that's when some epic astrological cycle will be complete.  All sorts of things in the galaxy will be lining up and being nice and neat.  And it's not so much that the world would end, just that their obscenely large scale calender would reset.  Or something like that. 


Oh wait no, now I remember.  It's actually when they predict that the earth will break in half.  Hm, my mistake.  Also the end is near.

Historians don't find people's thoughts that the Mayas just HAPPEN to know when the cycle would complete to be a likely answer, they find it as a coincidence.

The Mayans had an incredibly accurate calendar, great for predicting all kinds of astronomical stuff.  Just not so good at predicting doomsdays.

Actually, historians aren't even sure what the Mayans thought about 2012.  All this cosmological convergence, world altering whatever and doomsday is all modern interpretations of a date on the Mayan Calendar.  But considering the obsession the Mayans and their successors had with the end of the world, chances are it'd be much the same.
