They were both alright candidates, but really, if McCain got elected, we might hear people say lame shit like '4 more years of Bush' or something like that.  Ah well.  I have a feeling that it will take at least a full term to get rid of all the international hatred of America that has cropped up over the last 6 years.  It didn't always used to be like this...  Really though, its all a big joke now, but another decade of 'business as usual' may really, and I stress -really- (not really as in, 'I am trying to make a point so I will say really', but REALLY) could have resulted in the downfall of the US (probably over a longer period still, but it would have been irreversible).  The amount of international hatred is scary.  Hope it can still be restored.

I don't understand how people can think that, Desler.  It strikes me as very naive.  Do you really think hatred like that is so easily quashed?  They hated us before Bush too.  They only "like" us when we do what the "international community" wants.

But, I guess we'll be able to see this put to the test now.

Do you not realize that we are a part of the "international community" as well?

If you're trying to make a point, spit it out.

If the Internet is any indication, where before 9/11 I saw virtually no public US hatred, versus today where there probably isn't a forum around where some international voice won't hesitate to speak out against the 'bloated slovenly war hungry US', then I'd definitely say public opinion is running against the US now more than ever.  I don't know what any official polls or numbers might say, nor will I pretend to be a history buff.  All I know is what I see, and what I see is 'playful hatred' today, mixed with a slight bit of 'genuine hatred'.

In my study of human psychology, people usually start getting 'playful' with an idea to see if it is socially acceptable, and if it becomes so, they'll be more open with it until is acceptable to turn that playful idea into a genuine trait.  It's a trend I've seen ever since the US started making War in Iraq (didn't see much when we attacked Afghanistan though).  And while there have always been public protests of something the US has done stretching out what I'm sure are decades, I believe the Internet gives us the opportunity to grasp the civilian point of view.  When the common man of another country sees the US as shit, it won't be long until that mindset starts working its way into the politicians and policies of foreign nations.

I wouldn't exactly say the internet is a good reflection of public opinion... it's always seemed overwhelmingly populated by liberals to me.  But in regards to your general point, I agree that we've been disliked more these last few years, but the question is, for what?  There are some things we must do whether or not people like it.  So they might dislike us, but that's just the price to pay.  Then there are people who have always hated us, and current events have just made them more vocal.  That is probably what you are referring to, I think.  I think a lot of it comes from people just being told how bad Bush is, etc., and they develop a kneejerk reaction.  Come to think of it, the international media is leftist, so it would make sense that their slant colors people's views.  They would like us more with Obama, of course, because he is a leftist as well.

In any case, so long as we are a superpower with the influence and power we command, there will always be a sizable chunk of the world hating us.

EDIT: Wow, I'm over McCain losing.  (I think.) That was quick.  It's time!  Finally we can take the axe to those moderate wishy-washy McCainish Republicans.

So, you guys are the ones that won.  Got nothing to say?  I was expecting more cheers.

I'm plenty excited.  But I'm also still confused and in shock that Obama actually won.

How crazy is that?
