Lost Odyssey - Anyone else play it?

Post by Marco »

There are no spoilers in my post.  If you do post spoilers, please post an ample warning.

I'm about 6 hours into it so far, probably one of the best games I've played in years - it had me captivated very quickly.  I'm amazed it is getting such mixed reviews (some as low as 2.5 out of 5).  The game plays at a very slow pace (after the beginning that is), but if you take time to smell the roses and immerse yourself in the world, you'll find a unique tale filled with a rousing story.  Created by Final Fantasy creator Hironobu Sakaguchi, and music composed by Nobuo Uematsu.  It's truly a time for old school Final Fantasy fans to rejoice.  I can't help thinking while playing the game is that this is a lot better than any of the previous Final Fantasies I've played, and is probably better than all the recent ones except possibly  FFVII.

Sakaguchi may have failed with Blue Dragon and its goofy elements, but this one, at least what I have played of it so far, is on an entirely different level.  If anyone has a 360, don't be afraid to buy this game.  I don't think anyone here who usually appreciates a good story will be disappointed.  One thing I have to say is that this is more of a story first, and a game second.  To me, thats what I want when I buy a game, though I'm sure many people have different tastes.  Give it a try though.  I played it in Japanese language mode, as I'm doing with all RPGs these days that have the option (Eternal Sonata, Blue Dragon), so I can't comment on the English voice acting, but the Japanese voice acting is spot on.

Ah- I was quite interested in purchasing this, although I can't until I return from my trip to Cancun on the 2nd. So I'll be picking it up soon after. With staff from Final Fantasy in this, I never doubted it, especially the music.

Heh, well I thought the same for Blue Dragon but I hold a very low opinion of that game.  This one on the other hand succeeds magnificently.

Saw this in a copy of MCV the other day -the story is very similar to Planescape: Torment, isn't it? A scarred, long-lived man wandering some realms discovering his old memories?
One thing I have to say is that this is more of a story first, and a game second.
And that's exactly what people said about PS: T, too. One of the best stories ever, but poor as an actual game where, you know, you actually interact and do stuff.

Piking hell, yer crazy berk, read up on the PS:T chant here!

I remember Joel posting about it on TWC once, I'm glad he got round to playing it since it's an awesome game. Dated by today's graphics, certainly, but very engrossing if you can get into it.

I've always wanted to like Planescape: Torment, it does have an awesome story and interesting characters (plus Planescape is a rather neat setting), but I just can't get over how Black Isle redesigned the Infinity Engine's (made by Bioware for Baldur's Gate 1 and 2, used by Black Isle in PS:T and Icewind Dale 1 and 2) interface, from awesome into some horrible instrument forged in the pits of Hell...

Still, it's well worth playing, if you can find a copy of it.
