It's been almost three years . . .

Post by Legion »

..My account information says I signed up here August 21, 2007. That's almost three years ago! Of course, I was also here twelve years ago, but who's counting?

..I guess I came back here after I heard about SC2. And now it's here. I've had a good time waiting for it together with you guys. This is a good community to be part of. I know I've been an asshole sometimes and I'm sorry. I read my old posts back and I do seem quite full of myself. I'm not, though.

..So, what's the plan? What are my plans? What are we going to do now that we have what we've waiting for for so long (Starcraft 2)? I know I'm working out how to make a map for SC2. I've been typing and backspacing at a storyline. I've been doing some voice recording and editing as well. I wish I was better at all of that.

..What are we up to now? Is this community on the move or is it standing still? Is this the old times again?

..I've been part of this community for the last three years and I've seen a lot of things happen. The one who's kept a lot of it going is Lavarinth in my eyes. Without him, who knows what would have been left of all this?

..I guess I don't really have a point to make here. I just want to say it's cool we've all hung around for so long and I'm hoping against hope the best is still to come.

For me, I'm going to play.

And play and play some more. (FFS is tonight, there may be many dudes online playing SC2)

After I've played a whole lot, I'm going to open up the editor, and see how bad the map I was working on in beta has been broken. Then I would like to work on that some more. If I get somewhere with it, I may eventually ask for help from the community to make it a full fledged "project." But first I have to get somewhere with it.

Of course, I've never really made any (completed) projects before for SC or WC3, so I've got no name, let alone a big one. But hey, maybe I could change that by actually finishing this thing someday.

I would consider myself more of a competitive player now then a modder, but I will always follow the modding/campaign scene and even poke in and help out where I can. GL legion message me if you ever want to bounce ideas or get feedback :)

The big rebirth of CC that everyone was hoping for has come and gone. There, you had it. Well, you never had it. I saw this coming and it came and went. But there really wasn't anything we could have done to change that future. That's just the way online communities work, a lesson I've learned the hard way over the years many times. But I'm not too worried.

I waited a long time for sc2 and was sorely disappointed by it in beta and then release. I spent a very long time asking myself, "Well, what now?" The absurd restrictions and limitations of B.net 2.0 means that my days of making mods for Starcraft are truly over. I've got 3-4 potential concepts for campaigns but you know what? I only see one of those ever being started on. I started doodling a script and wrote out all the major voice actors I'd need. It doesn't seem very daunting at a glance but the horrifically bad editor will no doubt render production nigh impossible. If I did manage to do it, and break the cycle, I'd be in a strong position to make a much more serious project afterwards. Nothing that would be made public for sure. I have a private audience, tis all I need.

But I don't think so. Not yet. I'm not ready to attempt that. I think I'll stick to 2042 for a while and let the concepts mature. You've seen the last of my big releases. If/when 2042 gets finished and the massive package distributed to my dudes I don't really have anything else to do. I'd like to just focus on my writing... but guess what? That new drug doesn't do jack shit. I have no hope in hell of ever consistently writing ever again. I'd be lucky just to get 2042 to a good degree of completion. But I swore a Blood Oath to do just that. I don't care how long it takes. SC2 is just an afterthought, CC is just an afterthought. With the podcast dead and forgotten I don't really have much else to do here other than troll and bitch about sc2's shortcomings.

I thought about getting into heavy playing like Mantits, but more oriented to FFA's and not tournament-style stuff, but the campaign has proven to me once and for all I lack the mental capacity to multitask at all and there is no hope for me to ever improve my skills if they haven't improved over ten years. So, that's that.

And now I'm just really pissed off I've spent an entire year fucking with drugs for no benefit, and my psychiatrist is moving to North Vancouver and disappearing in three months.

Legion, if you want to be able to play with the others (and best of all, during the FFS event which is in 4 hours from this post), you will need to post your player ID there : viewtopic.php?f=76&t=3255 or at the very least AIM me at "Ricky Honejasi" (no "_" this time between the two words) about it.

Since time is quite short before this FFS event's start, at least you could join in for the next FFS event.

Thanks a lot, but you have no idea how much I suck at Starcraft. I can't play the damn game. Reason that the Dark Swarm Special Edition for SC1 took me so long it never even saw the light of day was because I got a lot of help fixing balance issues, triggers, upgrades and even little things like mineral placement! :) I wouldn't last a second against anything other than a learning curve AI.

@Mesk
Rebirths come and go, if you ask me. I think we'll be seeing a lot more activity here in the coming months than we've had these past couple of years, but I could be wrong. It won't be like 1998 - 2000, but that's because this is a completely different game (that just happens to be about the same couple of guys fighting each other). Plus the fact that we'll have to wait at least another two years before we finally get the complete Starcraft 2 experience is definitely a limiting factor. Starcraft 1 lasted this long because of the modding community. That's different now. But life finds a way.

We play custom maps too, you know. A lot of us suck at melee including me. :P

Should have some kind of melee challenges. Like, all of the bads could take on one good guy on a big map. Out of the player pool though I can only think of two people that would constitute as really good, with Mantits being on the top and me barely classifying unless I tried to sharpen my skills again.

I mean, I'd be willing to teach you guys how to play.

I didn't re-notice this thread until now but ... Legion, don't feel that you don't "deserve" to be at FFS or that you will just hold people back. Heck, even myself I am far from being that stellar in melee.

Even after 4 weeks of FFS, it already shifted to more custom maps or melee-like custom maps rather than true melee. Usually if we play real melee, it's usually for that 10-14 players FFA where pretty much everyone save the 1-2 best players expect to die horribly but still fight for the sake of trying to p'own anyway or bring chaos in the game.

Well, it's my main map/"mod" project so I will obviously prefer to play it. For your case, you usually miss one out of two each time so you are not THAT bad of a personal position about it. Plus I remade Pictionnary for SC2 which I believe you like it a lot.

Normally, my next best project would have been that defense map but as you know, B.net 2.0 and their bank limits just plain kill the big potential fun about it (lots of random custom offensive units by the players).

I've not been here for quite long, just one or two years. I had my head focused on making Duality and working out on that Sons of War project, which is quite deader than my grandpa, I can add.

But in over these years I've now managed to make up for more than anyone else around here would. I learned to write good, to model good, texture good, make good sound editing, the works... I lived.

And I complained, ranted alot I wouldn't be able to make it. But for the slacker I was, that's past the 'Mission Accomplished' thing. Now it's time to move along. Yup. I'm keepin' walkin. Despite all the pain, all the problems ahead, I kept moving on. And well... Here we are.

It's 'write well', not 'write good'.

Then I'd have to write 'well', texture well, model well... xD
