Seeking a desperate solution, the Prime Evils have launched a last-ditch effort to unravel the band of heroes from the inside. Each of them has possessed the body of one of the heroes, and in the dead of night, they have been killing off the heroes one by one.
The solution is a dark one: the heroes must figure out which of them is possessed, and kill the host. Sadly, it is the only way to rid the demons from their midst.
Welcome to MAFIA: Sanctuary! This is a variant I've been dying to test out, so let's see if it works!
It's a bit different from standard Mafia games, but those of you who have played "Death Island" with me will find it less foreign. In this version, every player - good or evil - has a character class, which is independent of their alignment. Each player is randomly assigned a character class; the distribution of classes is unknown. For instance, it could turn out that there are three Amazons and one Paladin, or zero Amazons and two Paladins. This variability gives each iteration of the game a unique dynamic.
Each of the character classes is designed to be useful to both teams. For instance, a traditional 'detective' role would be utterly useless to the bad guys; the Sorceress class (see below), however, is a modified detective that is useful to both sides.
CHARACTER CLASSES
Amazon
[imgwh 300x367]http://diablo.incgamers.com/gallery/data/514/ca1lrg.jpg[/imgwh]
Amazons possess Inner Sight, which allows them to track other player's movements. At night, an Amazon may target a player, and will find out who that player targeted with their own abilities, as well as who else targeted that player. The Amazon will only learn who the targets were, not what the actions were.
Barbarian
[imgwh 300x411]http://diablo.incgamers.com/gallery/dat ... a23lrg.jpg[/imgwh]
Barbarians can Bash someone during the night, which stuns them, preventing them from voting the following day.
Necromancer
[imgwh 181x359]http://diablo.incgamers.com/gallery/dat ... a22lrg.jpg[/imgwh]
Necromancers have the ability to Decrepify another player, nullifying that player's night actions.
Paladin
[imgwh 215x367]http://diablo.incgamers.com/gallery/data/514/ca4lrg.jpg[/imgwh]
Paladins can cast a Holy Shield over another player, which negates any other actions that would target that player during the night.
Sorceress
[imgwh 330x367]http://diablo.incgamers.com/gallery/data/514/ca5lrg.jpg[/imgwh]
Sorceresses can use Telepathy to learn other players' roles and alignments. During the night, a Sorceress may target another player and guess that player's character class. If the guess is correct, they will then learn that player's alignment (pure or possessed). If they guessed incorrectly, they will not learn the player's alignment, but will learn the player's true character class.
RULES
SETUP
The game is designed for 12 players, but it can be scaled depending on how many people sign up. For each player, I will randomly determine that player's class. Then I will randomly select three players to be the Possessed (mafia). The rest will be Heroes (innocents).
STRUCTURE
As in most Mafia games, there are two game states, Night and Day. During the day, players may talk openly and vote to lynch someone by posting in the forum thread. During the night, players may use their class-specific night actions by sending the moderator (me) a private message containing their decisions. The Possessed team wins when they outnumber or have the same number as the Heroes. The Heroes win when all the Possessed are eliminated.
NIGHT ACTIONS
Each character class has a unique night action. However, each of the Possessed players has an additional night action, Kill, but only one of them may use it each night, in place of their class ability. The Possessed must decide which of them will use the Kill ability at night, and which will use their class abilities. In all other cases, the Kill ability is treated like any other ability - it can be negated by Decrepify and Holy Shield, and it will show up as a targeting action to Amazons using Inner Sight.
Inner Sight - During the night, you may target any player, including yourself. You may also choose not to target anyone. Once all the night actions have been received, you will be told who that player targeted with his or her own night actions (but not what those actions were), and you will also be told who else targeted that player with a night action (but not what those actions were). Inner Sight can help you identify other players' classes, but beware of false positives, due to interference by Necromancers and Paladins, as well as the possibility of multiple people targeting the same person. Actions Decrepified by a Necromancer or prevented by a Paladin's Holy Shield will still show up as targets if you use Inner Sight.
Bash - During the night, you may target any player, including yourself. You may also choose not to target anyone. The following morning, I will publicly announce who got Bashed (but I will not reveal the identity of the Barbarian responsible). The targeted player will not be able to cast votes for the duration of that day. Bash can be used to stifle players who you suspect of mischief, or vice versa, if you're Possessed. Bash should not be used recklessly; if there's no overt reason to Bash someone, just don't Bash anyone, unless you just want to piss somebody off.
Decrepify - During the night, you may target any player, not including yourself (since that wouldn't do anything). You may also choose not to target anyone. That player's night actions will be prevented, including the Kill action, and that player will be informed that they have been Decrepified by a Necromancer (but I will not reveal the identify of the Necromancer responsible). Decrepified actions will still show up as targets to the Amazon's Inner Sight. Other Necromancers are immune to Decrepify; thus, if Necromancer A Decrepifies Necromancer B, and Necromancer B Decrepifies Non-Necromancer C, then Non-Necromancer C's actions will still be prevented. However, a Possessed Necromancer using his Kill action can still be Decrepified by another Necromancer. If a Barbarian is Decrepified, the Bash will not be announced the following morning. Decrepify can be used to prevent an action by someone you suspect is Possessed, or if you are Possessed, it can be used to prevent the Heroes from identifying you or interfering with your nefarious plans.
Holy Shield - During the night, you may target any player, not including yourself (since that would be overpowered). You may also choose not to target anyone. Any actions that would affect the targeted player are ignored, including the Kill action. Amazons, Necromancers, and Sorceresses who target someone who has been Holy Shielded will be informed that their actions were not successful due to Holy Shield. The following morning, the use of Holy Shield on a target will be announced if and only if the targeted player was targeted by a Bash or Kill action that night. Two or more Paladins casting Holy Shield on the same target will not cancel each other out, they'll just both happen. Holy Shield is used mostly as a doctor role, to protect others who you suspect might be killed or otherwise harmed, but it's also useful for the Possessed to protect each other from other night actions that could compromise their plans.
Telepathy - During the night, you may target any player, not including yourself (since that would be pointless). You may also choose not to target anyone. If you target someone, you must submit a guess as to what that player's character class is. If you guessed correctly, you will be informed that you guessed correctly, and you will also be told whether that player is a Hero or is Possessed. If you guessed incorrectly, you will be informed of the player's true class, but you will not learn whether or not the player is Possessed. You could then target the same player the following night to learn their alignment for sure. A Possessed Sorceress has no need to guess classes, since she knows everyone's alignments already, but the guessing will still be required as a formality.
VOTING
Voting is important, since it's the only way for the Heroes to win. They must successfully lynch all the Possessed before they are killed off. To vote, simply say vote Player, in bold. All such votes are final and cannot be changed. You may also vote no lynch. You may also formally abstain from voting, though this is not recommended. Once every player has cast a vote, the results will be tallied, and the player with the most votes will be lynched. If 'no lynch' receives the most votes, no one will be lynched. If there is a tie in the votes, the player who received the maximum vote first will be lynched. This also applies to 'no lynch.' This means that there can be no more than one player lynched each day; there are no double lynches, or by-default no-lynches.
TIMING
To discourage shenanigans like last minute ninja-voting, there will not be a strictly enforced timer for daytime. Day will not end until all votes are cast, but if you are suspected of deliberately stalling, you will be punched in the face. Night will last until all the night actions are submitted. Please try to get night actions in promptly.
COMMUNICATION
The Possessed may communicate with each other privately at any time; in fact, they are required to, so that they can coordinate their actions. The Possessed must agree upon all their targets for night actions, and should all PM me the targets for all of them, so I know there was a consensus. The Heroes may NOT communicate with each other privately. Do not share information about your class or alignment with any other players, unless you're publicly announcing your role in the forum thread. Anything I send you in a private message must remain confidential; DO NOT share it with another player and DO NOT post any part of it in the forum thread. Do not encode secret messages into your posts.
DEATH
When a player dies, either by being killed by the Possessed or lynched, that player's character class, but not their alignment, will be publicly announced. Beware of trying to pass yourself off as a different role, especially if your name is Aekenon. Once you're dead, you MAY NOT post in the thread any more (except to say "oh no I died" or the like). DO NOT discuss the game with players who are still alive. Dead players may, however, talk freely with other dead players outside the game.
And there you have it. Hopefully these rules are comprehensive enough so as to eliminate any uncertainty. If there is a question about any rule, general or specific, you may post it in the thread or send me a private message.
And now, let the signups begin! If you wish to play in this game, simply post here indicating your desire to sign up. If you're new to mafia, or if your name is Ricky Honejasi and you just want to screw around and not actually put any effort into the game, or if you only have access to a computer once a month, you should probably not sign up, since this game has complex interactions that may be overwhelming to new or lazy players, and it requires an ongoing discourse. The game will start once there are 12 players, or once it is clear that everyone who wants to sign up has done so.
