Questions about DatEdit and WinMPQ

Post by telamon »

OK, so these two questions came about in my efforts to compose my own portable mod suite. It's not official or anything but I just have some questions as a result.
First of all, I am aware that WinMPQ requires various runtime packages to be installed on the comp before use. Is there any way or version that works around this?
Secondly, when DatEdit asks you about GRP previews it's looking for a certain MPQ. Due to limitations of availability my starcraft and modding computers are separate, so which starcraft MPQ should I direct it to?

Look for an alternative to WinMPQ, I believe there were some wc3 based ones but they still do the exact same thing so check around wc3 modding sites.

Install sc2 on your other computer, you can put your cd key on blizz's site and download sc anywhere...
¯\_(ツ)_/¯

The wc3 mpq tools are all awful. Just include the runtime packages with your suite, they are very small.

As for datedit, it should just default to starcraft normally? Otherwise patch_rt or broodat.

Finally I can get back to you guys on this, thanks for the help!
First off, you were right, DatEdit uses broodat.mpq.
And I found that winmpq is portable. After asking shadowflare a few questions, he suggested that I package vb40032.dll and mscomctl.ocx in the same folder as WinMPQ. If I do that, I can run WinMPQ without runtime package! yay! (the ocx file does not seem to actually be necessary, but shadowflare advised otherwise so I'll take his word for it)
Anyway, thanks! I'm not sure if I should attach the involved files but if you get the vb4 version of WinMPQ the files should be around where the runtime packages were installed.
