I think it actually checks after attacking because I've seen interceptors get one last attack in after the carrier has died.
EDIT: I've given up on the idea. If I'm going to do something like that, I'm going to need a fresh game engine. I wanted to build my game on Stratagus, but there's no documentation or anything on making a game so I don't know anything about it.

Making a new game from scratch is so time consuming and difficult, it is disgusting.
If you don't have a team nor any prior experience with any fields of modding, you're definitely going to want to abandon the idea for the time being...
