Map Database / Developer Tools
Hey guys, I've been a lurker here for some time and finally registered and decided to post - though I dare say I had motive. I don't want to step on any toes here so let me know if I am.
I'm an administrator with Starcraft-Source.com. We've entered our Map Database beta about a week ago. Seeing as you guys will be taking advantage of these kinds of features I'd really like to get your input on how we're doing. You can view the database index here:
http://www.starcraft-source.com/map/summary/
And find out about the advantages for developers here: http://www.starcraft-source.com/article/news/view/?id=337
We're also working on Galaxy Documentation and a Galaxy Code Bin
Let me know if you see anything we can improve

As far as I know the whole point of Campaign Creations is to host the exceptional pieces in a bit more then a single row of database so to speak.

Eh. I think the site is ugly. But I appreciate what you're trying to do.
There really isn't anything to look at. It would have probably been a better idea to talk about it when sc2 actually comes out.

It's a single row in a database when you're looking at the whole view. If you go into any map you'll find that each map as it's own screenshots section, forums, versions, etc. Thus eliminating the need for a project to be "hosted" anywhere.
You say it looks ugly, can you be more specific as to what you don't like?

It's a matter of presentation, Webnet. CampaignCreations chooses to focus on hosting, spotlighting, and promoting a small collection of the finest quality content. CC is not intended to be a database of all projects under the sun.

I understand. Do you see anything about how we're handling the database that we could do better? We plan on having a monthly featured map.

Well for starters, I don't think the orange fits. The layout could use a bit of work as well. For example, you want "Download" closer to the center of the screen so it's quicker to access.
You also probably want a minimap preview and a user comments section.
I don't plan to ever actually use the site, but that's what most collect-it-all sites do.
Speaking of which, you should really consider how you intend to one-up the billion other sites out there that are going to be trying to do what you're trying to do. For example, I imagine hive workshop will have a site similar to their existing trainwreck but instead dedicated to sc2.

He said it right. Focus on quality equals less content, focus on content equals less quality. There's enough content out there.Hercanic wrote: It's a matter of presentation, Webnet.
