Battle.net will try to upgrade your older version of SC which is why Mesk suggested SF's server because it has no version limits, using a mod for a campaign online is usually a bad idea depending how they were made unless stated otherwise (ie crashing you).

If all a mod has is things you can do from Datedit or Iscript they are more or less version independent, AI mods usually don't function properly across versions and if you are using Firegraft or any of the older incarnations you are restricted to the version it needs because of memory offsets the plugins use being different every patch.

Mesk is going to slap you for capitalizing mod.

Damn straight.

Version dependency comes from editing buttons. This is basically stuff like Stargraft and Firegraft. 99% of campaigns who use custom data will not need to downgrade because they aren't adding new clickable interface things like units or spells on heroes. But those that do are forced to use a different version of sc (usually). There IS a firegraft version that supports 1.16.1. So, a modern campaign using button editing has no excuses to use an older version unless they want to take advantage of better AI functionality (finishing unfinished buildings and stuff like that).

omfg their insane

Anyway, thanks for clearing things up there. Basically, most every mod is safe and won't make you lose your Bnet internets or something.

Would you believe this is how I discovered CC? Someone should contact the owner of rakrent and tell him to update his site.
Actually, it's a girl. I had her update the update before and now have to do it again, hah.

Personally, I'd prefer the top spot but her page currently is simply better overall.

As for anyone's complaint on campaign pages stating about downgrading: I am working on updating all the pages once things settle down on adding missing content. I am a SINGLE (human) being! ;) Hah.

it also depends on if its a SECWAD or a SEMPQ, SECWADs only work properly with 1.07 (they work on versions up until 1.09b but with up to 4 errors before launch)

Excellent point that I want to emphasize. Really any campaign creator now a days doesn't have an excuse to not use the current sc version even if they want to use firegraft.

Great idea! Now I can play with basic StarCraft Brood War without any changes because I closed the mod! Wow, I'd have never thought of that before!

Listen, dummy, here's what I'm saying. There are some campaigns that have mods, and some mods that have campaigns (meaning it's a TC with a campaign, see also: Zeji TC). What if, unlike the Zeji TC, there are actual FireGraft modifications? D'oh, there goes Battle.net. There's something to be said for ShadowFlare's server, but when I downloaded it and it crashed half my open programs at the time I think it's safe to say I'm not going to be using that.

And Hamachi is fucked to hell; maybe Vista has something against it but regardless I'd rather not use it. I'll have to see if I can fix it, but at the moment I'm pretty sure it's dead for me and I'll be working to bring players an experience that doesn't require downgrading.

Honestly, the best mods don't come from having to downgrade. That's like saying "IF IT DOESN'T REQUIRE MORE STEPS TO RUN THEN IT ISN'T WORTH LOOKING INTO." I know nobody here has actually said that, but I've seen it way too much and that appears to be where the arguement here is going.

As for SECWADs, who the fuck uses those anymore? You should have played the campaigns that use that at least three times each, why bother doing it again?

SEMPQs are a double-click-run, and FireGraft .exe's can be as well.

I know I may be beating a dead horse with these points, but I think it's time I stopped reading and started responding.

Yes, running a registry file crashed half your programs. All I can say is that if that actually happened, you deserve it.

Oh sure, blame the downloader, not the programmer. Great job, Steven!

Registry files are not "programmed".

Herc and others wouldn't release a registry file that is faulty with their project. Plenty of people have used it and shadowflare's server without incident. You are alone in your troubles and that often equates to problems with your computer. Unless for some reason you're running a mac.

Not a mac, no, and not just my computer. I've tried it on almost ten different computers and at least one of those had a Vista OS, a 2000, a 1998, a 7 and an XP. All of them had StarCraft installed from a disc and had the disc inside the drive at the time (I've also tried it on two different Vistas with the game installed and NOT requiring a disc).

These tests have also been done with Hamachi, and the crashes I was referring too have all been SF programs (WinMPQ, TBLPad, etc.).

Has to be something you're doing. You're the only one having problems. It's a registry file. How does it crash programs? It doesn't.

You can always ask Shadowflare herself, you know.

Big error pertaining to lost files. They work fine after I stop using SFS.

Start looking harder, preferably in the mirror.
