Agreed. I always found it funny that people asked my permission to use music I used when it isn't even mine to begin with. If you make a discovery of a good artist as a result of seeing it in someones project, you can always just throw a compliment to the person. 'Nice find.' Or 'you have good taste in music'. No need to ask permission even out of respect, as they aren't allowed to deny you permission. If you choose to use the same tune in the same context though, it'll probably look like a conceptual rip-off in many peoples eyes, so just be aware of that fact.Maglok wrote: There is stealing music and then there is claiming you have anything to say about it's usage.![]()
VE is looking interesting Laconius. It's difficult to ascertain the sound quality on the Protoss from the videos - mind posting a few sample mp3's? Just curious as to where you are at in terms of sound editing. I don't have any Protoss voices in my contest entry, so I'm not looking to outdo you or anything, just genuinely interested in the level of your sound editing skills.

From what I hear, he's got a matured, raw voice. Sounds a bit like Zeus in some areas. You're not under 30 anymore, are you Laconius?Desler wrote:Agreed. Because I totally said I claimed right to its usage, huh? Because I said people have to ask me for permission? That's why I posted it in the first place? What's with you always trying to deface me and putting words in my mouth? Give it a fucking rest already. I'm sick and tired of your bullshit. It's a wonder why I stick around this place with people like you constantly badgering me for the stupidest little things.Maglok wrote:There is stealing music and then there is claiming you have anything to say about it's usage.Hunter_Killers wrote: OH GOD ITS THE E-POLICE![]()

Would wager this is where the disagreement arose, and why Mag got on your case. You aren't saying you had a right, but "jacked" definitely has the connotation of theft, which again has a connotation of ownership. I'm not saying you said you had a right either. Just sayin'.IskatuMesk wrote: ...campaigns have silently jacked stuff from me, too.

Absolutely. Here's a few voice clips I randomly selected:Desler wrote: VE is looking interesting Laconius. LOL. I'm a fair ways from 30. I just have multiple methods with which to distort my otherwise unconvincing voice.BadManners! wrote: From what I hear, he's got a matured, raw voice. Sounds a bit like Zeus in some areas. You're not under 30 anymore, are you Laconius?![]()

Re: StarCraft: Vile Egression
Sendspace just always seems to give me a hard time. I have to refresh each page a few times before I get a link.
In any case, I love voice work and editing and let's see what we got here!
(I have some of the names mixed up, so with file name)
PCoYes00.wav: Very nice, a bit echo-y perhaps, but you got the basic protoss down pat there. You speak with that strong rough voice, which turns into those nice reverse reverbs. Also very clear, which is something people sometimes forget when editing Toss.
IG(Archon)-1.wav: Archons are really tricky to nail. They tend to end up noisy and not that clear. You got the archon feel, but at the cost of clearness of the voice. Mabye mix in a less distorted version on top that is clearer, it's how I tend to do dark templar or archons.
UZewht00.wav: Sounds a bit dark templarish, wouldn't be afraid of going even lower. Have you tried mixing two or more layers together? Like take one take, then create a 150% and a 110% voice change and mix em together, gives awesome effects. And uhm, the start is clipping badly.
UFDPss03.wav: Interesting. You really muffle away the voice itself and the background noise raises to the foreground in the silent bit. Mabye mix in another layer with a clearer pronounciation. It does have that Toss feel to it.
Nice stuff overall!
And what is your age then?

Thanks! I'll try implementing your suggestions. However, could you define what you mean by 'layers' ? Are you referring to flanges?Maglok wrote: Nice stuff overall!![]()
EDIT: Nvm, I believe I found what you were referring to.

Re: StarCraft: Vile Egression
Take a Dark Templar for example. If I do a dark templar I take my base recording, I amplify it to levels I like then I save it. I then make a copy, pitch one very, very low. It is not audible on it's own, but it gives that low rumble you hear in voices like Zeratul. I then get another and pitch that one down less, like 115%. The trick is that when you mix then together you are going to need to watch out that you don't start clipping, you are in fact adding 2 soundfiles on top of each other, it will be louder. Never mix 100% volume and 100% volume, go for less on both. Then tweak till you get what sounds right.
I also tend to take an exsisting voice sample and reproduce the loudness from it with a toss voice, works out in the end.

Well I can show you a dark templar I did. But I do think that I don't have it online, I'll put it on when I get home.
Anyways I do have a question for our campaign creator here: You are being very ambitious. You have shown some nice work, but do you think you are 'on schedule' if you will, or is all the sound, music and attention to detail slowing you down to get to your deadline? Interested in knowing how the 'feature creep' is effecting you. (The idea of 'hey thats cool lets add it, woops took a week)

Re: StarCraft: Vile Egression
Maybe this predicament would have affected me if I had chosen to take part in the previous campaign contest. However, I believe I have reached close to what I would consider the zenith of my map making abilities. Remember that boss fight that was posted earlier? I finished that in 3 hours after non-stop bouts of voicing, triggering, and map detailing. (Normally, this would take me like a week due to my sheer amount of laziness.) In other words, I am taking this contest very seriously.Maglok wrote: Anyways I do have a question for our campaign creator here: You are being very ambitious. I am not doubting your ability to finish, I just wonder if you noticed it being a lot more work then you thought and if you have had to 'cut ideas' so to speak.
