Sons of war is alive again!

Post by SnakePlissken »

Hello,i just noticed on the moddb page of the mod, that the promising sons of war (remember the protoss vanguard?) after a long pause,is alive.
They are searching for mappers,3d graphics and so on.I will copy the announcement here:
SgtHK wrote:Almost two and a half years ago, with the hopes of an SC2 fading away, a small band of little known people from StarCraft.org challenged fate and attempted to make an SC2 of their own. And thus, StarCraft: Sons of War was born. From its seemingly humble beginnings, Sons of War (SoW) grew into a diverse collection of talented people who excell in skills such as Mapping, Modding, Storyline Writing, Concept Sketching, Sound Editing, and 3d Graphics Design and Animation.

The project stood strong for more than 2 years, even the light of SC2 didn't break the team's will to continue forward. But in the last 7 months, when our project leader ITSTORRASQUE4U suddenly left the team , the project progress rate came down so low that it nearly screeched into a halt, with the active member list dropping to only 2-3 members; many from the public theorized that the project was dead for good. But now, under new leadership, Sons of War has been reborn! Iit continues on its progress where it left off and is now rising back to its original glory.

But although most of the people who were called back in have returned, we are in need of new blood to get the project done. And with the newly found optimism of the project members, nothing beats the satisfaction of seeing new recruits ready to help out. So this is an announcement thread AND a recruitment thread.

We have prioritized the skills we need based on what we currently require for the project right now.

1st Priority: Map Terrainers - The mapping dept. is in dire need of map terrainers and triggerers alike. Half of the maps still need to be tested and and a third of the total maps still have yet to be made.

2nd Priority: Modders and Sprite-Makers - There are still units sprites that are currently undone.

3rd Priority: Voice Actors and Sound Editors- Very little had been done for the in-game unit quotes and cinematic voiceovers and special FX. We're gonna need talented voice and sound artists for the game developlent and cinematics department teams alike.

4th Priority: 3d Modelers and Graphics Artists - So far we only have 3 people working on the CGI cinematics. Every extra hand we get will make our lives alot more easier (and faster)

For anyone who wants to join the team, send me a PM along with some personal info and a sample of your work relating to the job you want to do.

And MERRY CHRISTMAS!!

The lesson here is an old one.

Don't listen to people saying they're going to make you stuff. If they want to brag about their project, let them write up a making-of piece or something afterwards.

It's actually pathetic how this example exactly follows the mock announcements made by a number of people here throughout the years.

Let me make mine now...

"Ok, I'm going to make a tc that's gonna change everything!! new units, new buildings, new heroes, new tilesets!!1 i need writers voice actors 3d artists scripters modders level designers and webmasters. plz let me know if you have any of these skills, and plz send a sample of ur recent work!! we don't just take ANYONE hahah!!!"

Fuck that.

EDIT: Yes, I am a jerk.

@Legion:
No, you are not a jerk. You are realistic, man...

I'm quite sure, they won't finish their project. ::)
It's too much stuff, and moreover, at the latest if StarCraft II is published, Sons of War blows up in the insignificance.

I am curious, in any case.  8)

I guess you could call it Beta, more like Alpha. You remember the first maps of each race in StarCraft? Where you "learn" how to use an Overlord and Drone, even though you already learned how use builders through Terrans by using an SCV, and then you learn how to use Probes later?

Well, this campaign likes to teach you things too.. How to use an a Drone and Overlord. Funny.. Considering they're building a story off the main storyline, so people would have to play the storyline of StarCraft, thus learn the functions of all units, to be able to understand it.. Yet they want to spend useless maps and gameplay time teaching you this. I was bored immediately.

I stated this to them, before my account was mysteriously removed from their forum, so I hope they changed that.

Do most of the story/triggers/terrain/modding stuff yourself, then after all that is done get help in the areas that you need, thats the only way your going to get a decent campaign done. You CAN'T rely on other people for campaigns, it just doesn't work.

Plus it makes you sound stupid, like you can't do anything yourself, which of course isn't the case.  ::)

We're being harsh here but the underlying lesson is if you want something done you got to do it yourself and you can't count on anyone else, especially for a free mod. Finding genuine, good, active help is EXTREMELY rare.

I remember reading that the original reason they stopped was because their main 3D artist quit and told the team that he didn't want them to use any of his work anymore.

Every extra hand we get will make our lives alot more easier (and faster)

Heh, rather naive. More people =/= faster/easier work. It just means more management and coordination difficulties, and a higher probability of drops (which affects moral).

Yeah, team projects rarely work. Just know your limitations and do it yourself. Don't promise 20 new units, original music and full voiceover for all your 45 original, gameplay-intensive maps. Instead learn how to use the editor (and/or the modding tools) and get to work. Depending on others to get things done is a huge disadvantage: the SC community has had team projects going for months or even years, and many of them failed to release anything at all.

Get help from other people mainly for beta testing and extras. You know, eye candy and polishment details the project can live without... so that, should these people give up, your project won't be crippled. :)

Yup, we all read this. And we'd like to thank every one of you for pushing our project a little bit forward ;P
