Anyone play Sins of a Solar Empire?

Anyone play it? The story seems okay but there isnt a campaign really but you sort of create one with ever kind of map stlye you chose and what race you have. It seems slow like im on a campaign with like 16 planets and its hard to get from one to another. Slow sort of with battling but hyperspace makes it easier travel, wish there was ground battle.
Sort of made me think it was like StarCraft 2 before its out or similiar style to that of Star Wars Empire at War. Has anyone else played it and what do you think of it? Races are sort of similiar to that of Protoss, Terran and Zerg I think.

I liked Stardock's past work (Galactic Civilizations II was awesome), so I'm definatly going to get myself a copy of Sins of a Solar Empire.

If I am going to play long games of strategy, I rather play Space Empires 5 with DoW.
Heck, I already made a small custom mod (one of 5x ressources, 5x build speed and 3x ship speed) for SE5 to make our 1v1s faster overall.

Re: Anyone play Sins of a Solar Empire?
Eh. Sins had potential but it really fails to deliver on any grounds.
Graphics-wise it's lacking rather heavily, for example the engine doesn't actually support movable turrets (so they don't turn to face anything) and games can even lag my machine and are virtually unplayable on older hardware.
Sound-wise nothing horrible although a lot of the voice acting makes me cringe.
There is no campaign to speak of so you're either playing vs the exceedingly stupid AI or a dwindling community filled with random retards like in every other given game.
Gameplay-wise is where sins really suffers, though. The three races are extremely similar with only major differences at certain points and there is virtually no micro or anything to speak of. Lots of silly problems like being able to just jump out of most systems and get away with no problem, resulting in stupidly long chases and other such things.
Really, I wouldn't spend money on it. Stardock made a good move not using any protection but the game itself is seriously lacking.

I can't believed I bought this. I thought for one there would be a campaign and a better story than just it saying "A race running from its creation", "some exiles making their own way in the universe", and "a violent alien race".

Oooh, a violent alien race. Good thing, I was getting tired of all those other friendly alien races from other games.

Well, it got good and bad points.
====Good Points====
- If you like the game, it's addicting. Better check that clock to see the time it is (although you click the interface's top to see your computer's time)
- Very moddable, it's mostly a matter of making text modifications of existing files in addition of having easy mod usage in the game.
- Lots of ship customization. Want your ship to have specific weapons or gear, specific or hybrid roles, etc.? You got it.
- It's a turn-based strategy game that does have a point in playing it unlike some other games that feels too much repetitive due to applying always the exact same strategy and such in the end.
- Has offline turns feature in addition of simultaneous TCP/IP which covers all multiplayer cases.
====Bad Points===
- If you don't know how to play it, it does have a very considerable learning curve.
- Does have bugs that can ultimately prevent you to finish your game, somewhat worse in multiplayer.
- Can take ages to finish a game, for example, I played a 1v1 with DoW on the biggest galaxy possible and it took about 100 hours (for around 100-200 turns) to be more or less halfway of our game.
- Bad AI unless you use mods to make them better or don't mind to use settings to make them cheat ridiculously.
- Can't manually do the battles in multiplayer. Only in singleplayer vs the AI.
- Bigger multiplayer games with multiple players pretty much requires torrent support or special server support to transfer the turns since the files can become horribly big. In my 1v1 with DoW, a single big turn's combat replay easily became 10 megs compressed. Extremely large scale turns with maxed human players (16) can become 60-100 megs which is a royal pain to transfer to EACH player.

And to think that usually the games without stories generally have catchy titles. This one seems to lack both.Lavarinth wrote:Funniest part.. You don't know what the Sins are.. Or the Solar Empire..
