Yes im either really blind as a bat here or i physically am unable to mine for gold in book 2 Chapter 2 iv looked at all the units even the one that comes from the necropolis and its only able to harvest lumber am i missing something obvious here?

That's the gimmick of the units. You need to find alternative means to obtain gold.
