Full-on SC Conversion

Okay... Say If someone managed to make a full-on conversion of an old rts game that was no longer supported at all and it was re-skinned into a playable StarCraft game with good plot, is it possible to distribute it for free here or on staredit.net without trouble or not? It would be like a fan campaign, but it has it's own cutscenes and is basically it's own .exe
Is it possible it could work?

Blizzard has in the past sent DMCA to projects converting games to Blizzard material (a specific case being C&C to Starcraft). You will also get DMCA'd if they find out about it. Keep it under the table and they'll never find out about it. I would avoid posting it publicly.
The exception would be if the game is one of Blizzard's own. E.g. Warcraft 2.

Really? That's interesting but okay. I think publishing it in the forums and StarEdit keeps it on the down low without so much as claiming ownership as well as selling it is enough to keep it from getting a DMCA notice right?

Wait, you said don't be public about it, so I guess the forums count as public... Crap!
Also, the game I had in mind is complete abandonware.

Playing with someone else's IP in any serious manner without a license is asking for a C&D. Are you willing to have 5-10 years of work go down in an instant? Most of the teams out there don't seem to grasp this fact.
It's perfectly fine to make a game like Starcraft but you can't make Starcraft.

Yeah true... point taken.
I also did hear that a full conversion mod for WarCraft 3 has already re-skinned it into a starcraft based modpack that has gotten popular back in the years. Besides, I wasn't planning on selling StarCraft, I am not that crazy.
You know what, Nevermind I am going to drop the whole topic altogether. This isn't really worth the effort anymore.

I mean, Blizzard is probably not likely to ever look at a forum themselves, but all it takes is one person to complain and their lawyers will fist you.

These two videos tell me that it could be possible, as long as Blizzard Entertainment doesn't sue me into submission and nonexistence.
