RSS feeds etc

Hello everyone! Fun to see there's still life in the site!

I basically registered to ask if someone felt like making an RSS-feed for the news of the site, a feature I'm greatly missing. I doubt it is difficult to make, and it would surely enhance my day at least :)

While I did register, I got an email telling me my password. For the safety of everyone, is it really necessary for the forum to know the passwords of its users? Why not just save the MD5 or SHA1 hashes of the passwords instead? Even if not much harm can really be done here, it could cause trouble should someone get peoples passwords. Most people have the same password everywhere, so it could be devastating somewhere else...

Thirdly, If the staffers are really as alive as I imagine they want to believe themselves to be, someone should move the two top tutorials here to here, as they are modding tutorials and not StarEdit tutorials.

Well, cheerio!

On the subject of how forums store passwords. It's MD5 + thingy (can't get the name atm), if you recieve a mail with your pass it has generated that once. You should thus not be able to query your password from the forum, only reset or change it.

Yet in your Profile -> Account Related Settings, you are to set a secret question. "To help retrieve your password, enter a question here with an answer that only you know."

Is that text thus incorrect, meaning you really can't retrieve passwords?

Well then, if is safe, it's great :P

On to the other questions: Is it possible to create an RSS-feed for the news? Who has permission to edit the tutorials page? :)

RSS, what is that:?  I see it -everywhere-, I know we didn't use to have it, but its been around for like 2 years or more.

Yes thank you evil Desler.  But maybe someone can explain it in a sentance or less.

It basically lets you get a notification about news on sites. Instead of manually surfing to a few dozen websites to look for news, you get them inside an RSS-reader (like Mozilla Firefox) in an extremely convenient way. This way, I currently get news and updates from 11 sites by clicking on one button.

I would very much like to add Campaign Creations to that list :p

Ello, Ojan, nice to see you stroll this way. I was out, but back. Your questions:

The passwords: Indeed, there is no way for anyone to recover the password once created.

The tutorials: I'm currently in the process of "redesigning" and reorganizing the resources for SC, but it's a slow process on for the past five months I have been on the verge of graduation and am now down to three weeks. After this point, speed will increase as I decided to inconveniently take my "after school graduation vacation" to Cancun three weeks early. Hah. I'll take your suggestion into account, and if you have any more let me know.

RSS Feeds: Yes, I do know of them, and have been looking to attempt to understand it more and try to make myself understand how to make the feed work for one forum (announcements) and implement it into the site. My coding expertise are rather limited to designing (HTML, CSS, Flash) instead of functional things. With no coder in play as staff, it makes the goodies like RSS a little slower to bring in. Rest assured, it's planned though.

The tutorials: Heh, it's hardly a suggestion, more like a bug report. If the site follows any logic, then the StarEdit tutorials ought to be about StarEdit and map making, while GRP- and BIN-editing has nothing to do with mapping and thus belong in modding :)

If you want futher suggestions, I say put up a new page for Formats and Specs. I have a few to contribute if you create such a page.
I dislike the idea of removing existing pages, so I suggest putting all outdated tutorials on the bottom of the Modding page (unlike how it is now, when one is met by the Arsenal II tutorial second from the top). Updating the SC programs would be great too. If I was you, I'd list all the downloads for Windows at the top of the page, followed by Mac DLs and then DLs for GNU/Linux (or perhaps "other OS:es" or something).

Mainly just updating and improving what is already here, really (although when it comes to tutorials, it's more like replacing almost everything with up-to-date stuff).

RSS Feeds: I searched at the webpage of the forum software and found this link. Not sure if it helps, but one can always hope :)
