A man in a wheelchair recovering after surgery from being severely beaten on tuesday by two teens. It wouldn't have been such a big deal if it weren't for the fact that the perpetrators beat said man with metal bars (which also includes one from the guy's wheelchair).
Police have charged two boys, aged 15 and 16, with intent to cause bodily harm and armed robbery.

Both have been denied bail and are expected to remain in custody pending future court dates.

Suspects claim self-defence

Friends of the accused teenagers are trying to turn the tables, saying they were provoked by Proden and lashed out in self-defence.

"My boys called me up and said that. I know it's true for a fact that they don't hit anyone for nothing," the father of one of the accused said, speaking to BBC reporter Phil Mercer.

"They said that the guy came up to them and was hassling them."

If there was a verbal provocation, that's still no excuse for what happened, said Proden, who has not spoken about the incident with her son and has no idea what prompted it.

"They have legs — walk away," she said.
It's horrid to believe that anyone can commit such horrid brutality and claim it was self-defense. I mean, come on, hitting a guy once for being an ass is one thing but this is just pushing it too far.

Personally, I'd say they're going to risk major charges, self-defense or not. Nobody who beats someone so mercilessly should ever be allowed to walk freely for what they did. They could've killed the guy and faced murder charges.

Australian news video of the attack. Doesn't show the whole attack just a glimpse, and no worse than you'd see from regular cable news over here in North America.

Somehow I don't think the "Self Defence" claim is going to fly, it looks like they approached him and initiated the attack. Either way, whether there was verbal abuse or not, beating a man in a wheel chair with metal bats constitutes Assault with a Deadly Weapon and I doubt you can claim self defence on an unarmed, handicapped man.

So... here's hoping they spend the next few years in jail.

Given that they seriously injured the man, I seriously doubt they're going to be leniently let off the hook. This is enough for the boys to be found guilty in court.

If it were up to me, I'd rather every crook be as dumb as this guy just for laughs.
