[Music] Database of free non-vocal music, where?

(I dunno if this belongs in the workshop subforum, if it does then you can move the thread to there, mister moderator.)

What I want to know is this: Where do you guys find music to your projects? Do you have any suggestions on sites with a lot of good-quality music (preferably with as little voice\lyrics as possible), that is also free? I don't want copyrighted music, I'm old fashioned that way. ;)

(I know I could just search google, but then I wouldn't bask in all your experience and wisdom. )

What you are looking for is something that could also be known as royalty free, which means for using their music you do not have to pay for it, other than buy a right of usage, which then the music is technically yours to present and use as you wish. Meaning the authors get not royalties, much like "copyrighted" music does. Copyrighted in this sense simply means they can sue you for money due to not asking for right to use the music. There are exceptions such as student work, parodies, and a few others that allow you to use copyrighted materials. Anywho, I digress, you are looking specifically for something free, however. I'm not aware of many sites that are free, but one place you can search is:

Search there, then look on the web for the file.

Yeah... not 'free'.

What is it with this generation :P

Ok: Free, royalty free, is not YouTube converting. It is still copyright protected.

That said people have been using copyrighted music for ages for custom creations, mainly that gets through cause they aint making money off it. (Do NOT mistake it for being lawful though).

I will use exsisting music that is not in the public domain myself. :)

PS: YouTube is very crappy quality wise, even the higher streams, are still streams and pretty bad if you're an audiophile. :)

They are all free, and there are a few vocal songs, but mainly non-vocal.

Bad choice if you don't like Megaman though. Hope this helps...

For the most part no one's going to call you out on copyright, with one exception...

Trailer music.

Specifically Immediate Music and Two Steps From Hell, they are about the only companies actively hunting down distributors of their music and threatening to take legal action. But for the most part I would avoid using any kind of trailer music because it has become so overused. I'm in possession of just about every trailer music album released for the major companies including the super hard to find stuff, but I'll never use them in a mod or campaign nowadays. :P

Like I said that music is not free.

Also I have stated before that no one will go after you and that it's ok in communities like this. You should be quite aware that it is still not-free or royalty-free.

@Mesk: Yeah overused, though I'd use em for trailers. X-ray Dog does the same thing. That's exactly why it's semi-hard to get your hands on their stuff. I got a lot though. :P

If there is an option to PURCHASE music, it is not "free to use" in almost any instance other than personal use (listening). OC Remix falls under this category as they sale their composer's music and likely pay royalty fees to original gaming companies or music licenses.

Like I said: NewGrounds is one of the only places that offers STOCK music (that is what you are looking for) that is almost all royalty free. Copyrights vary so some may allow you to use it and some may not. Royalty means you pay them to use it. Stock means it's a database/dump location that sales music you may claim as your own or not have to note any composer, site, etc without risking being filed a suit against.

So are we required to ask the artists on newgrounds if we can use their music, Lav? I've always wondered that. If not, I'm sure they would appreciate it if we did.

Uh, what? Most of the composers on OC Remix do not in fact pay any royalty to do a remix. Furthermore, you do not have to pay for royalties, nor ask for permission, to do whatever the heck is posted on OC Remix as long as you don't try to sell it or claim it's yours.

I assume the same would apply to NG? if so, thank you for answering my question
