It was definitely a good movie although it was more First Contact than the "deeper" movies.  This movie, however, had everything - beautiful panning shots of the Enterprise in space, pretty good dialogue, a fairly sound plot as recent Star Trek stuff has been, solid acting, and of course, flippant Whedon-like remarks. 

The more hardcore Trekkie may not like some aspects, especially the ending, and those who prefer "high sci-fi" may feel the movie is missing a bit of heart but it's a solid sci-fi movie nonetheless and those have been few and far between.  I'm still more excited about the indie sci-fi movie called Moon which summons shades of 2001 and a deeply probing story.

I would have to say the best part of Star Trek was when young McCoy walks past Spock and mutters under his breath, "Green-blooded hobgoblin."  Classic McCoy.

I feel movies like this could have benefited largely from an extra hour or two of screen time.

Well, the movie was 2 hours long as it was and they had to cut some stuff out.  Shatner didn't make it into the movie but in a way, that's actually following Star Trek canon since Kirk basically died in Generations.

The ending of the movie was nice although I'm not sure how they'll be doing a sequel.  I'll avoid spoiling it fer now.

All hail Abrams!

That movie was so much freaking better than the star-wars prequels.  Those movies sucked donkey-balls.

Yeah, it was overall a complete package and a great movie.

Well I guess I will have to see it now.

It didn't suck. I actually kinda liked it.

It took my sister and a friend of mine to convince me to watch the movie, but after hearing a casual watcher and a Trek fan rave about how they loved it, guess that will be my first movie.

Interesting. I really didn't have much interest in the film as it didn't seem likely to be very good. I'm pleasantly surprised to find so many here raving about it.

It was a great movie, I was shocked and impressed, and best of all everyone I've told to see it and did love it!

The trailer had me thinking it wouldn't be good, to be honest. Looked like your average new-age movie with sex and violence every ten minutes, (read: Watchmen) but the trailer had nothing much relative to the movie. The only truly relative trailer is the one with JFK speaking in the back, as it was actually directed (yes, the trailer) by Abrams to make sure it relates properly to the movie.

It was pretty clear that Abrams got the guy who does the music for Lost onboard this movie, there are parts in the soundtrack that are almost identical to the music from the show. Also, Nimoy guest starred in the finale of Abram's OTHER show, Fringe, so he's just all over the place with this shit.

These days it seems the list of composers are slimming down. A lot of Hans Zimmer, Michael Giacchino, Danny Elfman movies running around. And each composer has their own style of music, but they are so similar between movies that the movie doesn't feel to have an original music track.
