WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Pirates attacked a U.S.-flagged cargo ship off the coast of Somalia with rockets and automatic weapons, but failed to board the craft, the ship's owner said on Tuesday.
The crew of the Liberty Sun was unharmed, but the vessel suffered damage, according to a statement from Liberty Maritime Corp of Lake Success, New York.

We need to strike their heart and blockade at least the major ports they're using in Somalia to launch these raids.
I'm hoping the UN authorises some sort of action, but I'm not expecting it either.

Why hasn't the US brought in a carrier battlegroup yet? A CVBG (I believe that is the abbreviation) would instantly resolve this by scaring the shit out of the pirates. Otherwise, they could cut their losses and just kill all of the pirates in one swoop.
The more they leave the pirates roaming the around the worse it'll get.

That would constitute a military action (even if it's a military 'police' action) in non-international waters, which is kind of a big deal.

Okay. So the UK/UN should send one.
They already have ships there, they just aren't doing anything.
Or they can just let pirates steal more ships and kill people, that works too.

It's easy to suggest that but sadly it's not practical. Read up on them here:
BBC NEWS | World | Africa | Q&A: Somali piracy
You have small boats of men armed with RPGs and heavy weapons attacking at night with nothing to lose, meanwhile I believe one US spokesperson said that they have something like one hundred million square miles to protect. The pirates rapidly rise in money and even status as a result:

Some news from today - the French have captured 11 of them:

Looks like it's time for America to play world police again.

They should just send some F-22s to the ports and do some missile practice there. Then after that deny that it ever happened. I mean F22 is undetectable right?

All they need to do is allow the shipping vessels to have a few armed guards.
