Filefront goes belly-up

Could be an elaborate April Fools (I expect Blizzard to toy with people's hearts about the sc2 beta personally), but it's a bit early.

Anyways, there goes the last semi-decent file host out there. Fuck if you had to keep stuff up long-term, though; you CONSTANTLY got e-mails every day or two if you want to keep so and so file, and when I was maintaining like 10 files on there my e-mail was flooded nonstop.

Still better than rapidshit or megavomit though.

While the impact of this may not seem very significant at first, Filefront also hosts a HUGE amount of community/custom content sites, including the primary content sites for the UT series outside of a few sparse skin sites.

Great, I really don't look forward to the rise in Rapidshare bullshit.

Yeah- That would make us take a week to download a 7 zip file campaign with their kind of limitations.

Hm- Honestly, I don't know, I would think it's an April Fool's, personally, simply because of the timing, and in addition to this, sites like FilePlanet ad FileFront were originally created with money in mind, and those ads bring in revenue without even being clicked. If they weren't making money, why would they JUST be considering shutting down as opposed to the previous years. Ads still pay and if anything, people are more active online now than before as they scour the internet for deals and sales. I know this has led to a massive surge in sales in my company's website that I work for.

Things like ABP (which are more popular now) mean the ads never load in the first place, so they don't get money even though they use bandwidth.

I've read from comments that alot of the people running FileFront were going to make another network with Strategy Informer, couldn't really find anything else on it.

Maybe Fileplanet will finally step it up now and become a quality provider of hosting.

Oh man, I kill me.

FilePlanet doesn't even have wait lines anymore that are full for an hour, hah.

I think UT will be one of the games that takes the biggest hit from this. UT2004, UT3, 99, all of them. There is a few sites out there that have their own little database (like skin city) but the filefront sites by far had the most stuff.

Luckily I'm pretty sure I have most of the skins HKS and I used for ut2004 lying around still. If not, I'm pretty sure he does.

It sucks pretty hard because this is going to destroy those games. Especially UT3 that is still struggling to get any kind of custom content going.

Mediafire is pretty good, 100mb limit, no wait, and no real ads if you uncheck that little box dealie.

It costs like nothing for webspace/transfer.  You people should stop being such cheap bastards.

Larger media can eat up a lot of transfer, and any host that promise unlimited or unmetered transfer will only indulge you for so long.

So glad you volunteered. When can I see your download site?
