Good, nice to see you tackle genuinely disgustingly hard games.

BTW, Bayonetta motorcycle chase scene soundtrack is not from Final Fantasy 7, BUT, it sounds very iconic and I really think I heard it somewhere before, but I cannot place my finger where.

First I thught it was from F-Zero X, but then I haven't found anything similar enough in that game, but I know I have heard the exact same motive before.

I have listened to fair share of game OSTs, and some things just blur a bit, but some things I can assure you 100%, when a certain track is from, or is not from, any FF game or any SquareSoft (pre-merger) game for that matter.

Also, Bayonetta Seg 3 1:51:04 a mention of Jesus.

Which I think is out of character on the basis that it is a fictional universe.

This is like J.R.R. Tolkien mentioning steam locomotives in LotR.

There is actually quite a lot of religious references in japanese games, I think.

My advisor is telling me castlevania 3 might be a bad idea at my current skill level, so I may just jump right into symphony of the night instead.

Ok, I've sat through last 3 productions and didn't comment before cause you were releasing faster than I could watch ^_^

So here's my thoughts.

Last of us. Knew about that game prior, watched some of it. To me it comes off as "how to make a casual look more casual" because of how braindead it is. I personally find that any value of the game goes by it's worst point. And holy shit there is a low margin here. Through much of the actual LP I felt that cast suffered quite some from your agitation due to cat situation (understandable), but my concerns were alleviated during review. I'm actually surprised how forgiving you are during reviews. That is very respectful attitude, Mesk, props for that.

Bayonetta. I only heard of some serious hype about that game. And I personally try to not engage in knowledge of games I plan to play, especially if there is any community-driven hype. So I've ended up sitting this one out at the time and quite relieved that you've played it. Save for obvious drawbacks I liked it, especially some soundtracks. One thing though - english cast. Fuck me why can't 'merika find new voices (rhetorical question)? Almost every Japanese-ish game of any value is being cast in English by the same darn people all the time. They are good, yes, but I've heard them so many times that I start to hallucinate those voices. Overall though I felt that game had a decent atmosphere that I actually have no criticism about cast at all. It is only during some unjustifiably long missile flying segment that I've got a bit detached from proceedings. That and during final boss runs (even though I loved the soundtrack on that). So - yeah, too bad another franchise with potential thrown into gutter.

Castlevania. YES. Finally you've stepped into my area of anal ragnarok (arcade games that I played and hated myself for putting myself through that while also feeling as DA MAN simultaneously for completing). You were very obviously hardcorely upset during that. And it was glorious. You can add another meter crawled on an endless shaft on the way to the tip to your tally. But there are many more I think all of us would love to see you bleed through. Dunno when the time for other Castlevania games will come, but I would suggest not skipping Order of Ecclesia cause I think it's quite a nice game (though emulator I played it on sucked tremendously huge hairy balls and Drac has incredibly retarded amounts of HP). Overall the Rondo run was everything I expected it to be ))).

Since you've said summer's gonna see some arcades done - there are quite some finishing which gives a sense of actual achievement. Being through that myself (as horrible at games as I am) I cannot stress enough how hard of a man one should be inspired to be. And as much I relish busting an ass on Ninja Gaiden, I would suggest relatively recent Super Meat Boy because it is in fact quite a good game overall. A definitive must play. And eventually there has to come a time for IWBTG and IWBTB. Without them reaching one's destiny is impossible. And there is not too much room for expansion of horizons afterwards - an entire legion can work that goatsehole simultaneously then.

Oh, the good times... Mesk, you bring all the good memories. Ones we'll hopefully one day share :3

I've actually heard pretty universally bad things regarding super meat boy in that it's a really bad generic attempt at being a more classical punisher and lacking a lot of the design refinement of the old games. IWBTG suffers from a lot of major stability issues and is more muscle memory, death training to get things through. But you never know, I still might do them at some point.

I try to be as neutral as possible during reviews and try to consider a lot of things. I think often times I am too lenient, but my experience with games in the last decade is kind of limited so my viewpoint is still kind of evolving from title to title. There is a growing hatred for how easy games are these days and all of the really cheap shit developers take to get out of putting effort into things, and it is becoming more and more obvious with the more older titles I do that "current" titles are seriously lacking any kind of real design. When someone pointed out to me that Last of Us had X many game designers I was completely fucking floored that not only I had missed that when I was watching the credits, but also that the game turned out as it did - with the gameplay being by far the weakest point of the game - when they had so many people working on it. But this also draws into the whole publisher and focused marketing thing and it gets real messy in a hurry to delve into.

The cat business is extremely stressful. It is not something I needed weighing over me, and it universally has fucked all of my work. Things will never be the same now. It takes all I've got to keep it together and keep going forward. I have too much history with animals and these kinds of things to simply forget, and now that daily reminder is ever stronger with the lifelong drugs I need to manage.

Well, I have to agree about lacking certain refinement in that super meat boy, but it's far from bad. You know, more often than not people who stuck in old games are correct in their conclusions. However, most of them draw that conclusion from simply being stuck in their beloved old games, not effectively critically comparing things. Like when they find a point to bitch about - that's just it, if there is any excuse - they're gonna overblow it. I didn't play THAT many games to call meatboy generic by any means, but I say this - it played good for me and I didn't encounter bugs (except one relatively rare auto-replay glitch - a feature only casuals really care about). Game made me steam quite a bit, but it was not because of the game, but because of me being bad. And I went out of it feeling rather good (just good, not IWBTG kinda good/raped). I suggested Super meat boy preferably because it runs great for me and there is no emulation involved - so setting things up shouldn't present any challenge.

IWBTG has known stability issues, but there are ways to make it run consistently as far I can recall. Although that may be an issue, I'd cut a developer some slack, all things considered. The way it goes is a design preference in and of itself I think. As for it being muscle memory-oriented - isn't that true for ANY arcade? And deathtraining is not exactly uncommon in arcades either. IWBTB has no stability issues that I'm aware of, despite being made by just one guy btw.

Generally - there is a lot of incentives in 'modern' society to not make things up to high standards. Not least of which is excess of programming power being artificially castrated by 'console' solutions. Not that this excuses developers, but still. Hope for the best - prepare for the worst.

If you want to punish yourself, Takeshi's Challenge is better if even for the lulz. So contrived.
