... I'm afraid it's pretty hard to make a more universal format than h264 right now.

No dude, don't get the latest FFDSHOW

Go to ffdshow-tryouts at sourceforge.  The regular FFDSHOW fork has been pretty much abandoned.   All of the new work is coming from the doom9 forums on the tryouts fork.  Check it out!

LOL, mesk, also, XVID is pretty much the standard for all encodes.  H.264 is alright, but for the modest file-size reduction, it takes a significant amount more CPU.  On my old box, I couldn't even decode 720p at fullspeed even with CoreAVC.  MP4-AVC is not even really a mature technology yet.  XVID (ASP) didn't even reach maturity until after AVC came out.  Basically, on any video under 720P, you're better off using XVID simply for the compatibility.

So yeah. =)

Have you played on expert? She kills the person who startles her with one hit.
Yes. Once she killed 2 of the other guys, but we got her down in time. Took a lot of planning, we were lucky to spot her, and I had the hunting rifle, we all had molotovs, and it was at the end with the chain gun. And it still cost us 2 dead folk, I didn't die though. :)

Um, no one is running on pentium 2's, anymore. If my old Athlon 2500 XP could run these videos fine, so you can you, so can the other guy, so can everyone. That's not even a concern.

h264/mpeg-4 is pretty much the standard on big releases these days. Virtually all new anime releases use it. As for compatibility, ffdshow is all you need to my knowledge. Xvid needs the xvid codec, divx needs the divx codec, it's no difference.

I'm using x264 because of the quality and size returns. 400mb for a video that looks better than a 750mb video? Yeah, that's cool. I can play it fine, that's all I care about. People bitch that my files are too big, I offer them a smaller video, they bitch some more? Well, they can fuck themselves if that's the case. I've been using Xvid for years and I've always found h264 to deliver superior results. You're free to prove me wrong - There's a 400mb mb h264 video in my Epic Video Guide thread, the HoMM5 month 1. If you can make it smaller with xvid and completely retain the quality, I'll be very surprised. Otherwise your words are meaningless to me. It takes five seconds to grab ffdshow.

Xvid was the standard a few years ago and it's still widely used, but as far as major projects go, they tend to use h264, or Xvid with h264 CC, whatever the hell that is. I'm just using what works. h264 works, everyone besides Herc can view it. *shrug* I don't even know what's wrong with herc's computer. I tried to help him fix it but he doesn't want to use VLC so I guess he's on his own.

The minimum resolution I use for my videos is 640x480, anyway. I like high rez, if I can record it. With HoMM5 I really can't because it performs like complete ass with the latest patch. With other games, like l4d, they'll be high rez, and xvid videos with high rez tend to be huge. I constantly get whined at because the files are "big". What the hell do you want me to do?

Hell, if you really want me to, I can make two versions for each video - Xvid and h264. God knows SA and CC have the bandwidth to have 10 versions, each twice as large.

You are 100% not getting a 400mb file that looks better than a 750mb file.  The difference is not that drastic.  You also have to remember that if that was true, you now have a much larger amount of lost information.

However, if we're talking about high-res files, that's when AVC really shines.

Anyway, I guarantee you that your AthlonXP can't run a 720p AVC video at full speed.  Also, I don't care how you put up your videos; I was just responding to your assertion that AVC is more universal than XVID.

It probably depends where you look. Most of the things I've downloaded are h264. (Then again, most of the stuff I've downloaded is high rez, too)

And yes, the difference is pretty big.

I would be lying if I said I knew how to configure xvid, though.

Dear IstakuMesk:
As I mentioned over AIM, even the most updated FFDshow did nothing. Gogo make it in a more universal format! =oP
That's interesting.. Cause VLC, the program you say sucks, seems to play all of Isk's videos just fine.

The witch runs off and doesn't come back after killing the person who startled her. Everyone else would have to leave her alone, though.

Good to know. We usually all just start emptying guns into her though.

Lavarinth, VLC sucks because the interface is soooooooooooooooooooo bad. You can't get controls in fullscreen mode.  It looks ugly, etc.

Who cares. You're watching a video. The interface doesn't have to be fucking saint mary and tap dancing jesus in a brothel.
