Hmm... I've thought about this. There are other things that Blizzard has done that  may be related:

-You cannot name games.
-You cannot host a map that has not been published (as far as I know, unless they change it later)

All of these serve to prevent "unmoderated" open communication. No fake games that are just advertisements in the game title. No maps used to spread material Blizzard disapproves of (they can ban the person that uploaded it; otherwise "porn maps" might proliferate fast with the ability to use flash movie textures).

There's also the possibility that the Chinese government's endless control demands play a role, but it's unlikely that alone would make Blizzard do this to all realms.

If this is the case, it seems like a severe overreaction to a minor problem, and rather... authoritarian.  :P
To me personally, not being able to name a game is not too much of an issue especially with the way that it becomes the host that have to manually invite everyone wanted (and fairly easily if everyone is on your friend list, just hoping the friend list isn't limited to like 20-30 like in WC3). As for public games, I say they should at least show the player host's name (especially in cases that you get booted and you want to avoid rejoining the same game 3-4 times in a row only to get rebooted).

Although the lack of map hosting without having to publish does annoy me since I can easily want to test things with a few select others without having to even privately publish (don't want to have 5-15 "test" versions laying around on their servers). Sometimes, it might be that I got an interesting idea of a map but it might be possible that it get removed if they have content checkups and they find it just a bit too much (enter inappropriate-equivalent word of some kind) even if it wasn't that bad.

There is other aspect that might annoy me a lot about the potential publishing-only mentality. Let's say you found that new map that interest you a lot and you play it. Let's say said map gets removed out of publishing for a dumb reason. Then you are screwed out of playing the map or the map version you really want. That's presuming that published maps are "cached" like the current melee maps are thus you can't "republish it" back.

As for "porn" maps, I believe all those "safeguards" won't really cut it anyway. At worst, it will be some cheap porn there and there that nobody really cares due to the probable file limit for the published content of some kind. Heck in both BW and War3, I don't remember seeing even cheap porn maps often on the game list.

I've seen complaints that without being able to actually pick a named game, the player is repeatedly forced into the same game selected by the system, even if the host is AFK or has selected options the player doesn't want.

Oh gosh, now that's annoying for real. I also thought the custom game list I saw was a just a nameless list of games but it seems it's a map list then.

So yeah, a named list would be much better in that case.

What? You prefer random bonus over a guaranteed "if you can see it you can shoot it?" Technically, that means a Marine behind a tree on low ground can take 10 Hydralisks on high ground because of luck.

Micro, not attack-move standing on the ramp with your ball of ranged when you can move up it.

Now its like ok I have a Medivac, I can destroy all of your buildings on the edges of your base and you can't do anything about it.

Ever played a game called Starcraft? It's pretty cool, people have been making six-digit USD annually by professionally playing it in massive tournaments with tens of thousands of fangirls screaming their name. This game has a mechanic where units sometimes miss units on high ground, giving units on high ground a positional advantage and adding value to terrain. No other RTS in existence has even come close to it, the closest would be wc3, but it's played by so few that Europeans manage to sneak into the top ranks and even win tournaments against Koreans.

Then there's the game called Starcraft 2 where holding a ramp doesn't mean jack shit and nor does cliffs or hills. There is no positional advantage and the value of terrain is massively degraded. It's a very boring game to play, actually. People will probably just play dota instead.

No, seriously, the whole "random chance?!" argument is complete and utter bullshit and anyone who tries to hide behind that is not only retarded but missing the fact that THAT'S WHAT THE FIRST GAME USED AND IT'S 11 YEARS OLD AND STILL DOMINATING GAMING.

There's being optimistic then there's being a blind fanboy.

Also your example is complete and utter rubbish. Please be at least somewhat serious.

/e

As for the inability to host without being published that 100% assures that even if I bought the game that I would never make a multiplayer map ever again. You can probably still backdoor this the same way I did with LoL to prevent my custom content from getting on their server but seriously you shouldn't need to do that at all.

There's talk of "uploading it privately" so only you can see/host it, but that makes it less likely that you can just host the file off your comp. You can already backdoor the process with a program that switches the map file while you're in the lobby but it's an annoying process and all players have to do it. If Blizzard really is that obsessed with controlling everything they'll probably prevent that too, though.  :P

I just said it for the sake of argument. I believe SOME advantage has to be given on higher ground, but not a random chance.

I believe people should stick with what works and stop dumbing down sc2.

This is actually subverted. I remember my first 1v1 I played with Arcan. I tried to run roaches up his ramp and it took me a second to realize that my roaches weren't actually shooting at his marauders. The game reveals the attacking units but you can't actually attack them unless you have a unit on level with them. Very unintuitive, not to mention inconsequential in all points of the game except really early.

I could have swron they fought back provided their attack speed allowed it while they were visible. Since Roaches don't shoot right away, they cant fight back, while a Marine should.

I'm not terribly certain that's the case and it doesn't mean either that there shouldnt be another advantage of sorts (in particular either random chance to fail or a small damage reduction).

Somewhat irrelevant, but does anyone find that standard transports in this game are nearly worthless? Medivacs are far more used for their healing capabilities than mobility, specially with units like Vikings and Reapers (scvs are more commmonly transported through a CC); Overlords can't compare against Nydus Networks, as expensive as they are; and Warp Prisms are more used for Warpgate suprise buttsecks or temporary power up than anything else (well, except moving probes to islands).

Overall units move faster and have longer range than sc1 on top of smaller maps. I have seen some nice dropship play out of people like PainUser but the majority of the time there is no need since it only takes a few seconds to cross the map and a-move your way to victory.

Guys, I am currently ranked #15 in Platinum.

I am an emu.  And I am #15 in Platinum.  There is something wrong with this game.  Or at least the ranking system.
