And people could always buy and sell items, so what exactly would be different?
Blizzard is full of fat people that want you to be fat so they feel better about themselves as they drag race their yachts around the pacific.
Basically they fully intend on having items with Zod rune drop rates ie, you will never see one before you ragequit. I also won't be suprised if they have in-house accounts selling items on there for full profit, no one would know.

I have to admit, while I don't like it, I think the Auction House idea is brilliant.
@HKS: I'd like to imagine that Blizzard will have some form of security preventing in-house accounts from selling ultra-rare items for profit. But no matter what they do, or how hard they try, that's totally going to happen.
I'm still conflicted about Diablo III's always-online component though. I don't like it in SC2, which is even more leniant than what Diablo III is planned to be, but to be fair that is basically how I played Diablo II. The main reason I got the game was to play it online with my friends. I think I only ever played two characters offline. And one of them was actually originally created as an online character who I converted to an offline character rather than let her expire and be deleted.

Always online doesn't bother me, personally. My modem is wireless so any instance I wanted to do something on a computer that doesn't have a permanent landline (e.g. on my laptop that can't even play games more demanding BW) I can wirelessly connect anyways.
