Re: SC Recording software
Any of the videos I have from recording were just like watching a game, it wasn't freaking out like ricky's was, either that or it was encoded badly.

Re: SC Recording software
When I checked, even the uncompressed version lost sync when it was in the end of the video ... not sure when it started however.Hunter_Killers wrote: Any of the videos I have from recording were just like watching a game, it wasn't freaking out like ricky's was, either that or it was encoded badly.
Forwarding the replay might have done something. It seems unlikely but the possibility might be still there.

Re: SC Recording software
Fast forwarding a replay causes significant lag and I wouldn't be surprised if it desynced the audio from the lag. Otherwise fraps has never desynced audio for me, even in the laggiest of situations

Re: SC Recording software
Meh, recorded sound is not on sync with the video (fine at beginning but desync grows worse over time) on BW even if I play normally (did it with the STF mod this time).
EDIT : After checking some things, it seems some others had the same kind of problem due to their internal audio recording going at 48 Khz instead of 44.1 Khz which screw over Fraps in some audio sync cases. Still trying to change according to the info I see (just not obvious if it's even possible).
EDIT 2 : Okay, it's even more odd since I am not sure if the above is true but it's obvious that the audio (11:04.00) is a bit longer than the video (11:02.60). See pic.

Re: SC Recording software
Hmm, would a program that only outputs uncompressed be fine? It sounds like you may be doing that anyway with some of those programs, right? If it would only be uncompressed, maybe I could look into making a program that would specifically be for recording SC. I've already made programs that redirect SC's drawing to a different output buffer. Making copies at set intervals and writing them to a file probably wouldn't be too difficult. I suppose I could also look into how I could capture the sound to go with it. What sound would you want captured? Just everything from "stereo mix" ?
Actually, that would probably be quite large. It probably needs at least some form of compression.

I am not sure that you can make better than existing recording programs although I guess you can still try for a specific one for Starcraft.ShadowFlare wrote: Hmm, would a program that only outputs uncompressed be fine? It sounds like you may be doing that anyway with some of those programs, right?
Yeah, it will be fine for most people since usually video recording is uncompressed to first keep all the quality as much as possible before using the compression codec that the person wants after recording. Also, nowadays most people that are fairly serious about it got 150+ free gigabytes of harddrive just for that as well.
Also ensure you output as AVI since virtualdub (a popular free video editor) only opens AVIs and other formats tend to require paid programs.
As for sound, yes it's from "Stereo Mix" or "What U Hear" (depending on sound driver). Any other method (other than just recording from current Windows recording settings) would require too much time for nothing.
If you add compression on the spot, do ensure it's very quick compression since too slow would cripple the video recording down the road. Also make it a last priority for compression features.
EDIT : Do consider that speed (managing to record every frame presuming the computer is logically strong enough) while managing to keep the video and audio in sync is of the upmost importance in this very case.

Re: SC Recording software
Fraps does to on-the-fly compression to the video it records otherwise they would run into the 4gb AVI limit alot faster.

Hmm, never knew since its compression didn't seem that much compared to Guncam's for example.Hunter_Killers wrote: Fraps does to on-the-fly compression to the video it records otherwise they would run into the 4gb AVI limit alot faster.

While fraps does compress it is still quite "uncompressed" in relation to other programs. I have serious doubts that going into full uncompressed would make a difference, especially with the AVI size limit which would be hit relatively quickly. I am almost certain the cause of this lag is something wrong with my computer, especially when 2 programs that recorded with no lag previously suddenly don't work anymore.
I wouldn't want to use your time only to find it still doesn't work.
However, if you did make such a program and made it able to record from a selected audio source, I know a lot of people would shower you with <3 from TL and other progaming communities.

Re: SC Recording software
dear god it'd be like my process for converting videos from Vegas but in realtime recording. I don't think the HD would be able to keep up with it.

Re: SC Recording software
lol, yeah, that was part of the reason I was thinking at least some form of rudimentary compression might be needed. On that note, is the free space on your hard drive fragmented any significant amount? If it works fine for recording other stuff, particularly higher resolutions, this probably isn't the issue, though.

Re: SC Recording software
Well, I did de-frag semi-recently and after an extremely long time it wasn't fragmented enough to hinder recordings. I am able to record from other programs without much issue. I'll try defragging it sometime in the near future and see if that helps.

Re: SC Recording software
Hey, here's a mindfuck for you.
I tried out Xfire.
Other than dropping people out of my games, it works. The videos play fine in mpc, except they desync audio, so I opted not to record audio.
So, I go to save the video in Vegas.
HAY LOOK AT THAT EVERY FILE THAT COMES OUT OF VEGAS HAS NO VIDEO DATA WHAT THE FUCK
Okay, so I encode as uncompressed. There IS no codecs to worry about!
It's still black.
I am about to put a sledgehammer through this computer.
