Please wait until after this summer. They're coming out with new Core2s at 45nm. Also, all the new video cards are coming out next month. However, when picking memory, make sure you look at the timings. Also, don't skimp on a motherboard. You'll end up having problems down the road.
I'd say:
4g Memory
Core2 Duo - Get the second highest clock speed on your tier. The highest clocks are just OC'd.
ATI RADEON HD 4850 (it's only like $200 and you can crossfire up to 4 of them)
Sound Card - Doesn't matter
Power Supply - Make sure you get a really good power supply. 400-500W, but make sure you check the Amperage. Power means nothing with bad current.
Case - Make sure you get a big tower with good airflow.
Cooling - Since you have a lot of money to blow, you'd be well served by some sort of water-cooling system. If you really want a crazy clock, you could go for something called a phasechange cooler. This is actually an air conditioner for your chips. It's a closed-circuit freon system. These run about $1000, but you can easily overclock your CPU to around 3x its normal speed. Phasechange cooling takes up a lot of power and requires its own plug. It's awesome as hell though.

I've been using Vista since it was released. The only problems I have ever had with it were due to insufficient memory. It is a RAM WHORE, so I would recommend a minimum of 2 gb of RAM. But 4gb for anything more than standard gaming and surfing. Vista runs fine as long as you have a wealth of memory and hard drive space. Oh, and you have to either be really patient or turn off the "Ask-you-a-fucking-question-every-time-you-wanna-breathe" thing.
It's a pain to install Adobe CS3 in Vista. I never succeeded.

Make sure to get a 486, at least 75mhz and a cd-rom drive. You want to be able to run X-Wing, its a very good game.

I'll probably be getting vista, if only because i hear newer cards dont have drivers for XP. Any truth to this?
Any towers you guys can recommend? I know I need one with good airflow, i just dont know of one with good air flow.
I will definitely be getting 4 GB of ram. Any companies/brands yall recommend?
Same with HDs. Seagate, WD, etc. Which one isn't a piece of shit? They all look the same to me, and I see a lot of conflicting stories about them. I don't want a HD failure.
And I don't know a single fucking thing about motherboards...

As I said for ram, can't go wrong with Corsair.
afaik Nvidia isn't dropping XP support and I know Ati sure as hell isn't.

Vista is required for DirectX 10, thats the only thing for video cards.

Case is with epic airflow, and if you want you can rip out the front filters and stick fans in them.

I switched from XP to Vista and it takes some getting used to, but its a lot better off then it was when it first came out. U just have to disable a few things that vista does and check out
http://www.campaigncreations.org/forum/index.php?topic=839.0 if u have any problems with exe errors.

Well, they did unveil those Nvidia GTX 280 which is really impressive. Beats any true 'single card' and is even on par with some of those 'two cards in one'. And an SLI setup? Forget about it. You won't need to upgrade for years if you get that.

But you already wont upgrade for years for if you bought any card from the last two years. Hah.

Yes, my 2x 8800 GTXs will suffice for quite some time. I guess I'm entering that phase where they are still beyond reasonably sufficient, but there is a new king in town. And he is calling my name. Of course, I told myself the whole point of buying such an expensive setup was to not have to upgrade so often and save money. So I'll just have to resist the temptation until my video cards just won't run the games any more, which should still be quite a long time.
