That's a choice, though. They are encouraged to do it but - like me - they can also choose just to use it as a glorified chat room. I know plenty people who used their photos as avatars on IM as well.
Now what facebook does definitely facilitate is utterly insane marketing schemes like the farm game. Holy shit, reading articles about the stats on that just blew my mind.
