More like being Gordon Freeman with a bonnet is badass.
I didn't intend to make my character look like Gordon Freeman, but then I found some glasses, and gave them to him, and he totally does. And then I found a bonnet.
I do use the bolt-action rifle quite a bit, though.
And yeah, having played it a ridiculous amount this weekend, I have to say that it is most definitely awesome. It does have its share of hilarious glitches, but none of them have really had any effect on anything that matters. Just like the original Fallouts. They have so many hilarious bugs. The thing I've encountered most is shooting at a dude, and then they have retarded pathing and end up getting stuck walking into something for a few seconds, but then they just walk right through it.
There's that, and one time a Brotherhood of Steel Paladin randomly appeared inside a really deep part of one of the metros. I saw a random blood spatter appear in the air... that wouldn't go away. I've seen an NPC shoot at another NPC, only to see their corpse disappear, but to find it again later on the other side of a door. I've had another random brotherhood dude aggro me for no reason at all.
Also, having lived near DC for two years, and having actually been on those metros, it makes me lol to find somewhere that looks familiar. And I know all of the real names of places, and such. I'm curious to get into DC and see what it looks like.
I really am having a lot of fun playing this. Don't listen to Mesk saying whatever, especially since he hasn't played it. wibod is the only person I know of who has actually played it (assuming he's actually played it), who doesn't like it very much. I like it a lot, and my friends who are also playing it also like it a lot.

I'm just going by what I hear. The first fallouts bored me after a few minutes of gameplay and I never cared for the story, so I can't be assed to bother downloading this one.

Sounds like it still has all the bugs that Oblivion had. My dislike of this game stems from the fact that Bethesda is a bunch of retards that fail horribly at basic art design concepts. Also the game itself lacks a lot of the dark humour that made the first two Fallouts a lot of fun. It's no longer got a campy but good story, it's just got a cliched typical LOL NUKLEAR HOLOCUST story.

The Gamebryo engine is actually a fairly good engine despite it's numerous problems with scaling and some weird bugs that are more then likely the fault of Bethesda. Bethesda has horrible texture designers, for the most part everything looks flat and lifeless in Oblivion and that's a huge problem. This also extends into their model designers who have improved since Oblivion, but the animation glitches and general jerkiness are eyesores. Voice acting I won't even touch on since that is self explanatory.
There was a Korean grindfest MMO that was free to play called Requiem and it used the Gamebryo engine, going into it Mesk and I expected it to look like shit as we thought a lot of the problems with Oblivion looking terrible and washed out in general were engine related faults. Requiem actually is one of the better grindfests graphically as it has a very distinctive art style and while it relies primarily on a few colours it generally looks good.
Then there's Valve, they've been using Source for the last four years and their texture artists and animation department are second to none, the only companies that comes close would be Blizzard and maybe Bioware and Gearbox.
tl:dr: Bethesda games would look a lot better if they didn't wash everything out and tried to produce decent textures and animations.
Admittedly the PS3 version of Oblivion looked pretty nice because they toned down the contrast in game a bit and everything looked a lot better. I'll admit that Fallout 3 looks a lot better then Oblivion did, but it's still subpar compared to something like Episode 2 or CoD4 in art assets and design.

Alright- I played it for a few hours, and loved it personally. Wish there was a more in-depth experience in the teenage years though, like.. Do random tasks. I laughed at trying to save Butch's mother, but having a guard attack me, stalling me, and watching her die the moment I went in cause it was too late.

Same here (though I saved the mum, but don't ask what happened in Megaton when a certain sheriff attempted to arrest a certain villain

). I played it for a few hours last night and, inversely, read the IGN reviews today and pretty much agree with them:

Besides, "Oblivion with guns" is not necessarily a bad thing. It's still a fun RPG with loads of little choices and stuff to do, especially exploring. I've long been waiting for a game where I can trek the wastes, Mad Max style, just picking at the remains of civilization and fending off raiders.

Okay, just one question: DOES THE CHARACTER YOU PLAY SPEAK?

wtf no
You choose responses when you're talking to people, so technically your character is not a mute, but aside from things that you choose to say, s/he says nothing, and there is no voice acting for your character.
It's not really a type of game where it would be possible for your character to speak, in that sense.

I really wish the character DID speak. God, such a bore to just hear them talk only.

I used to love playing Fallout 1 when I was way younger... maybe I'll check this out if it's like that.

I'm not going to lie- I get eery feelings playing the game at night while it's night in the game. It's portrayed very well.

Fair enough, seems like if you bought it at full price then you're more likely to be disappointed in it, especially if it's substantially different to your preferred style of RPG. I borrowed it from work last week and bought it this weekend, I'm sure I'm going to get my money's worth.

It is, it's got much of the atmosphere and hallmarks of FO down to a tee. Nearly all of the same mobs are in there (Raiders, super mutants, centaurs, ghouls, etc) and stuff like Vault-Tec, Nuka Cola and, of course, pipboy.

I love how the perception system works - you don't get warned if something is behind you. Suddenly hearing a clunking noise and turning around to discover a Super Mutant Brute shoing a sledgehammer in my face provoked a yelp out of me.
The subway systems are enormously eerie. However, I'm more cautious than freaked out since I have damn good guns, unlike what the player has available in the legendary Ocean Hotel level of Vampire: Bloodlines.
