Personally I do like the show a lot but I don't even know about the 4kids version.

If you mean that you haven't seen or come across the 4kids dubbed version, then thank god you didn't. Saw one episode of the dub and couldn't even bring myself to watch it after that.
Good thing FUnimation is cleaning up that mess with the unedited DVD sets they're distributing (each one containing 13 episodes). The first one came out back in May on the 27th, whilst the second one is scheduled for September 23rd. Just thought you'd like to know about that, so your aware of it.

There ya go, another means to keep up to date (although anime4f only has up to ep.362 and mangashare hasn't gotten ch.513 yet, but they will at some point).

I think I saw a few episodes on cartoon network, its was ok but I'm generally not an anime fan.

As far as the show goes, I've only ever seen a bit of the 4kids dub, which I couldn't stand.  I know not to judge it based on that, of course.

I've read some of the manga, though.  I like what I've seen so far.  The pirate theme seems to appeal to me easily.

Oddly enough I'm currently in the process of reading it (on onemanga). It helps that I like weirdness in general 

Chapter 314 page 3 made me laugh my ass off because it's so politically incorrect.

well, i some watched the episodes, but i got lost later on, either they were reruns, or the episode list went nuts. :s
over all, it has its enternaining and sad moments,  like any decent anime show.
