Lich fact: While most liches have achieved lichdom through the Lich King's blessing and serve as agents of the Scourge, there are those who have achieved lichdom on their own, such as Gunther Arcanus and Morbent Fel.

Shadowpriest Sezz'ziz was a Sandfury troll charged with the task of gathering sacrifices to wake the hydra, Gahz'rilla, who slumbered within the troll city of Zul'Farrak. He had managed to capture a party of adventurers and was about to sacrifice them when another party of adventurers charged in and rescued them. Together with Nekrum Gutchewer, they gathered up a raid of a hundred trolls and attacked not one, but two, groups of adventurers who had fortified themselves on top of Zul'Farrak's sacred pyramid. It was a wipe.

And so, Lich Week ends in flames.

"By fire be purged!"

Ragnaros was the Elemental Lord of Fire, and a servant of the Old Gods. He fought alongside his masters against the Titans, but he and his kin were ultimately defeated alongside the Old Gods. Ragnaros and the fire elementals were banished to the Firelands, which was intended to act as both their new home and prison, while the Titans ordered Azeroth to their liking.

Ragnaros was eventually summoned to Azeroth by the Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan. Having had his forces routed from Grim Batol, and now facing the combined armies of the Bronzebeard and Wildhammer clans, Thaurissan was desperate for anything that would give him and his people an edge against their enemies. Using the Cipher of Damnation, Thaurissan, with the aid of his most trusted allies, summoned the Fire Lord. The sudden devastation unleashed on the Red Ridge Mountains, and the creation of Blackrock Mountain as fallout, caused the dwarven armies to pause, and turn back. They returned to their kingdoms, fortified their southern borders, and called it a day. They wanted no part in that mess.

Image
Welcome to the City of Thaurissan! Mighty capital of the Dark Iron Dwarves and site of the summoning of Ragnaros! It's seen better days.

As for Thaurissan and the Dark Iron Dwarves, they were enslaved by Ragnaros and forced to serve him as punishment for having the audacity to summon him. As the Dark Iron Dwarves went about constructing a new home for themselves within Blackrock Mountain, Ragnaros made a home for himself and his minions within the Molten Core, hidden beyond the depths of Blackrock Moutain.

Ragnaros continued to gather his strength, however his minions soon suffered a series of setbacks. First the orcs invaded and claimed most of the mountain for themselves, driving the Dark Irons into the depths. Then, just when the orcs have been weakened enough to drive them out, the Black Dragonflight decides to make their home there and reinforces the orcs. Still, not Ragnaros' problem. He was waiting to gather enough strength to unleash a fiery apocalypse on Azeroth.

Eventually, a group of forty adventurers succeeded in storming his lair in the Molten Core, killing all his minions, and was then called forth by that bumbling idiot he'd appointed as majordomo. After killing Executus, Ragnaros prepared to smite those forty troublesome adventurers, only to be defeated and banished back to the Firelands. He would soon have his chance for revenge, however.

"By fire be purged!"

With Deathwing's return to Azeroth, and the resulting Cataclysm, the Old Gods made their bid to end the world, once and for all. Ragnaros was quick to answer the call of his former masters, and with the aid of the Twilight's Hammer, was summoned to Azeroth once more. This time, however, upon Mount Hyjal. Tasked with burning the World Tree to the ground, Ragnaros went about his new mission with renewed enthusiasm. However, his forces were soon driven back by the Defenders of Hyjal, and he himself was banished back to the Firelands once more. The Defender of Hyjal then launched a counter attack on him and his forces within the Firelands. Despite the services of his new majordomo, Fandral Staghelm, and the Druids of the Flame, adventurers were able to storm his fortress of Sulfuron Keep, and kill him.

Having been killed in his home plane, Ragnaros was well and truly dead.

"A knight of unwavering faith and purity, Mograine would be betrayed by his own son and slain by Kel'thuzad's forces inside Stratholme."

High Inquistor Fairbanks was a priest of the Holy Light, the former High Inquisitor of the Scarlet Crusade, a former member of the Order of the Silver Hand, and a close friend of Alexandros Mograine.

Fairbanks had accompanied Highlord Mograine on the fateful day that his son, Renault Mograine, led him into a trap at the urgings of the Grand Crusader. Waves and waves of undead threatened to overwhelm them, indeed, Fairbanks fell early on and found himself buried alive under a pile of corpses. Despite losing the assistance of his pocket healer, Alexandros Mograine fought on, doomed only when Renault stole his sword and plunged it into his back, killing the Scarlet Highlord and corrupting the once holy Ashbringer. Fairbanks could do nothing to aid his friend, and watched helplessly as Kel'thuzad claimed the Highlord's corpse.

Left for dead, Fairbanks was eventually able to free himself from the pile of corpses he'd been trapped under. He eventually made his way back to the Scarlet Monastery, where he told everyone he could about the truth of what had transpired. Many of the members of the Scarlet Crusade who heard him left to form the Argent Dawns. Others, however, accused him of being the traitor, of showing signs of infection from the plague of undeath, or even of already being an undead spy. Fairbanks was then killed by members of the Scarlet Crusade, and his body was hidden in a secret chamber within the Scarlet Cathedral, becoming a literal skeleton in the Scarlet Crusade's closet. Sally Whitemane succeeded him as High Inquisitor.

It turned out, however, that the accusations of being infected by the plague of undeath were actually true, and Fairbanks rose from the dead. He seemed to be quite hostile to outsiders.

In the Corrupted Ashbringer Event, the spirit of Highlord Mograine restored Fairbanks to life, after which he would inform players of the history of the Ashbringer. This part of the event seems to have become non-canon, however, as Fairbanks dead undead body is later found in his cell.

"No more play?"

Patchwerk, not to be confused for some lesser abomination, was Kel'thuzad's avatar of war. Possessing immense strength and speed, Patchwerk quickly gained a reputation among the Argent Dawn and Scarlet Crusade for being a most fearsome foe. Despite his great strength, however, Patchwerk was eventually defeated by the joint efforts of the Argent Dawn and the Scarlet Crusade.

Living up to his name, however, Patchwerk was quickly reassembled and reanimated, and loaned to Archeus, to assist the Death Knights of Archeus in their assault on the Scarlet Enclave and keep them in line if necessary. When Darion Mograine and the other Death Knights were freed from the Lich King's grasp, Patchwerk attempted to help the loyal Scourge forces within Archeus maintain control of the Ebon Hold, however he was defeated and the remaining Scourge forces driven out.

Patchwerk was then reassembled and reanimated again. Quite happy to be back in Naxxramas, Patchwerk eagerly waited for more people to play with to arrive! Sure enough they did! Patchwerk was disappointed that they now only came in groups of ten or twenty five now, however. He was eventually destroyed again by adventurers. He has likely since been reanimated once more, waiting impatiently for when he gets to play again. Card games really can't take the place of raiders for him.

Doing Heroic Ragnaros when it was current was one of the highlights of an otherwise dismal expansion.

The strong energies in Medivh's tower have drawn all manner of creatures seeking to harness or consume it.

Netherspite was a nether dragon who had made her home in the Celestial Watch, once Medivh's personal observatory in the tower of Karazhan. She was lured to Karazhan by the magical energies within the tower. No one, however, has been quite sure just how a nether dragon, native to Outland, was able to end up in a tower in Azeroth. Not to mention how a nether dragon of her size was able to get into a room when she's considerably larger than all possible entrances. Truly, Karazhan is a place of great mystery.

Netherspite was killed by adventurers as they explored the tower.

"Who dares disturb my meditation?"

Twlight Lord Kelris was once the leader of the Twilight's Hammer coven that had made its home within Blackfathom Deeps. Kelris hoped that by helping to awaken the hydra, Aku'mai, and aiding in its growth, mostly be making lots of sacrifices to it, that he would be granted immortality. This didn't really work out for Kelris, however. When Twilight Lord Bathiel, one of the few surviving elemental ascendents created by the Twilight's Hammer during the Cataclysm, arrived and took control of the coven, he quickly had his predecessor sacrificed to Aku'mai.

”Tell me... tell me everything!”

Interrogator James “Sidney” Vishas was a member of the Scarlet Crusade and served as their chief interrogator and torturer. He, along with Blood Mage Thalnos were tasked with ensuring the “purity” of new recruits to the Scarlet Crusade. While he enjoyed all aspects of his job, Vishas came to delight in the torture of the undead more than anything.

Vishas was defeated by adventurers and presumed dead. His last torture victim, Vorrel Sengutz asked a group of Horde adventurers to retrieve his wedding ring for him and return it to his wife, as Vishas had stolen it from him and given it to his own wife. Horde adventurers then proceed into the Alterac Mountains where Vishas' wife, Nancy lived alongside Vishas' father. They killed them, reclaimed Vorrel's ring and returned it to his wife.

Vishas, however, had survived his apparent death. Likely fearing that the other members of the Scarlet Crusade would presume that he had contracted the plague of undeath like his former partner, Thalnos, Vishas left the Scarlet Monastery, only to find out that his family had been brutally murdered.

Image
”Naughty secrets!”

With nothing left to live for, and unable to return to the Scarlet Monastery, Vishas joined the Brawlers Guild as a gladiator. Taking on the name, Dungeon Master Vishas, some suspect that he might also be running a D&D campaign.

Naralex came to the Wailing Caverns to help revitalize the Barrens. However, as the druid slumbered, his dreams became nightmares, and began corrupting the caverns and the surrounding area. Some say his nightmares were caused by the corruption of the Emerald Dream. Others say that he merely caught a glimpse of Barrens Chat. The truth, however, may be far darker than any had dared to believed.

Image
"Naralex's dream turned into a nightmare, and corrupt creatures began to inhabit the caverns." -Ebru

Mutanus the Devourer was a murloc who lived within the Wailing Caverns. He may have once been an ordinary murloc, or he might have even come from the Emerald Nightmare, and twisted into reality. Whatever his origins, Mutanus embodies the Naralex's fear, hatred, and loathing of murlocs. Mutanus has been tasked by whatever force is corrupting the Emerald Dream to ensure that Naralex's slumber is not disturbed, and that his nightmares continue to feed the ever growing corruption of the Wailing Caverns.

Mutanus was killed by adventuers, and Naralex successfully awoken from his nightmares. The druid would later go on to be successful in his efforts at making the Barrens less barren, although someone later put a giant river of lava through his beautiful forest.

In vanilla I (a catdruid) along with a rogue and mage managed to 3 man wailing caverns while we were all under leveled. Our tank and healer left after first boss but the 3 of us were on the quest in there. Took like 3 hours of sapping and sheeping and soothing (when it decreased aggro range lololololol) everything that exists but we managed to do it after a long 3 hours. still one of the best runs ive ever had through any dungeon ever, I don't remember their names but ill never forget that run

also RIP barrens chat

Chat was the game.

(For the record, this is the Tank saying he didn't have Frost Presence, which, at the time, was the DK tanking stance. At this level no one knows how anything works because they ebayed accounts, so it was quite uncommon to actually get to the first boss in this instance for this reason.)

@Zilla-: Nice! Competent groups lacking a key role are the best.

@Mesk: That is every Hellfire Ramparts run after the release of Wrath of the Lich King.

"Finally, something to relieve the tedium!"

Ambassador Hellmaw was a demon in the service of the Burning Legion. He had, however, been summoned and bound by the Shadow Council members operating out of the Shadow Labyrinths in the ruins of Auchindoun. While he was kept bound in place, he was fed a steady stream of prisoners, so it wasn't all bad.

Adventurers eventually stormed the Shadow Labyrinths and killed the warlocks restraining him. Hellmaw was freed, and quickly attacked the adventurers, because really that's what he was there for. The battle was fierce, and Hellmaw enjoyed it immensely, however he was defeated and banished back to the Twisting Nether.

Image
"Look around you. Can you not see that we have already won?"

Ambassador Hellmaw can also be found in Draenor's alternate past, where he was tasked with corrupting a draenic crystal, the Light of Exodus, during the Burning Legion's invasion of Shattrath City. His efforts were foiled by adventurers, and he was banished back to the Twisting Nether.

"I do not enjoy conversation."

Phalanx was a golem constructed by the Dark Iron dwarves. He was employed by Plugger Spazzring at the Grim Guzzler in Shadowforge City as a bouncer. A job which he performed with the utmost efficiency.

He was defeated by adventurers when they started a huge bar fight in the Grim Guzzler. He has since been repaired and reactivated. Still alive, since most players now bypass the bar fight entirely.
