It's back to the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj, where adventurers must fight not one, but two emperors!

Image
"Ah, lambs to the slaughter."

Emperor Vek'nilash was one of the twin emperors of the Qiraji, and co-ruler of Ahn'Qiraj. Together with his brother, he served the Old God, C'thun, and prepared for the day when the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj would be open once more. Vek'nilash gifted the former anubisath, Ossirian the Unscarred with his new horusath form, and near invincibility, following Ossirian's battle against the dragon, Grakkarond.

"Prepare to embrace oblivion!"

Emperor Vek'lor was one of the twin emperors of the Qiraji, and co-ruler of Ahn'Qiraj. Together with his brother, he served the Old God, C'thun, and prepared for the day when the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj would be open once more. Vek'lor did most of the work in creating the obsidian destroyer, Moam, although Vek'nilash helped.

Together, they form...

I've always found it strange that you fight your way through a mighty bugman empire to fight to fairly ordinary looking humanoids. Albeit with brightly coloured clothes. Otherwise, yeah, their models look kinda half-assed.

Anyway, we return once more to Naxxramas where we fight not two, but four horsemen!

"Life is meaningless. It is in death that we are truly tested." -Highlord Mograine

The Four Horsemen were an elite group of Death Knights assembled by Kel'thuzad to help defend Naxxramas and lead its forces. Together, they act as the final bosses of Naxxramas' Military Quarter.

In green, Thane Korth'azz. He was once a dwarven paladin, and member of the Order of the Silver Hand. However, following his own death shortly after Uther's demise, he was reborn as a death knight in the service of the Scourge. In place of the holy light, he now commands the power of fire.

In blue, Lady Blaumeux. Much like her compatriots, she was also once a paladin. Her holy powers have now been replaced with the power of the shadow. She was the author of This Is My Runeblade: There Are Many Like It But This One is Mine, in which she discusses the importance of a Death Knight's runeblade, and various combat styles employed by Death Knights of the Scourge.

In white, Sir Zeliek. In life, a paladin. In death, still a paladin. While most paladins turned Death Knight lose their ability to draw upon the Holy Light, Sir Zeliek's faith was so great that he retains his holy powers even beyond death. Unlike the Horsemen, he also still retains much of his original consciousness, leaving him unable to revel in his corruption like his compatriots can. He's fully aware that he's become a monster, and feels all the guilt for all the terrible things he does against his will. He spends most of the fight begging you to leave while you still can, because he doesn't want to kill, but he's going to because he doesn't have any actual say in the matter.

And finally, in red, The Ashbringer, Highlord Alexandros Mograine. Once a paladin, former member of the Order of the Silver Hand, founder of the Scarlet Crusade, father of two, and wielder of the undead destroying holy sword, Ashbringer. In life, Highlord Mograine was amongst the greatest threats to the undead scourge in Lordaeron. With his sword and skill, he was able to turn whole armies of undead into ash on his own. Seemingly unstoppable, Highlord Mograine's doom came from within the ranks of his own Scarlet Crusade, and was delivered by the hands of his own son, Renault Mograine. Renault, having been turned against his father by Grand Crusader Saidan Dathrohan, led Highlord Mograine into a trap in Statholme. The Scourge threatened to overwhelm him and his friend, High Inquisitor Fairbanks. Fairbanks fell early on, but Mograine continued to fight wave after wave of undead. During a pause in the battle, he put the sword down for a moment. During that instant, Renault took the Ashbringer, and plunged it into his father's chest, corrupting the once holy blade. Renault fled, leaving his father's corpse, and the corrupted Ashbringer, to be claimed by Kel'thuzad and the Scourge.

The Four Horsemen were defeated by the joint efforts of the Argent Dawn and the Scarlet Crusade during their assault on Naxxramas. Thane Korth'azz, Lady Blaumeux, and Sir Zeliek recovered from this, and continued to serve the Scourge when Naxxramas was relocated to Northrend. Highlord Mograine, however, vanished after the battle. The former master of Stratholme, Baron Rivendare, took his place amongst the Four Horsemen. Like the rest of Naxxramas, they now wait for their day to come again due to the change in the Scourge's leadership, and play card games to pass the time. Sir Zeliek is quiet happy about this turn of event so far.

Oh, also, in 2009 today was Good Friday. Happy Past-Easter everyone!

Today we once again venture into a hole in the ground full of zombie pigmen. Razorfen Downs, or the Nether? You be the judge.

Image
"Me smell stench of the living!"

Most abominations are made from spare parts, and Glutton is no exception to this. The parts used to create Glutton were once part of Tartek the Enraged. Originally created by the lich, Amnennar the Coldbringer, Tartek was one of the Scourge's most powerful abominations. It accompanied Amnennar when he traveled south, to Kalimdor, to establish a Scourge outpost there. Tartek single-handedly killed over 1,200 quillboars during their assault on Razorfen Downs before it was defeated. While Tartek's destruction was unfortunate, his actions gave Amnennar the foundation he needed to create his own personal army of zombie pigmen, and secure Razorfen Downs as a new outpost for the Scourge. Salvaging what he could of Tartek, Amnennar created a new abomination to serve as his lieutenant, and named it Glutton.

Although Glutton was a pale imitation of the mighty Tartek, it was still a fearsome foe. Furthermore, Glutton, living up to his name, served an important function of keeping Razorfen Downs clean. Mainly by devouring the corpses of dead boars and quillboars that his master didn't raise as minions of the Scourge. As a result, Glutton smells like a walking pig abattoir.

Glutton was ultimately destroyed by adventurers when they stormed Razorfen Downs to destroy his master. Following Amnennar's apparent demise, parts of Glutton were likely used by the quillboar cultist, Death Speaker Blackthorn to create Glutton's successor, Mushlump.

And now, we venture to the Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj for one last time...

Image
"Fear is for the enemy! Fear and death!"

General Rajaxx was the Qiraji commander of Ahn'Qiraj's armies. In battle, he would command legions of silithid, qiraji, and their constructs against their enemies. Despite his towering presence on the battlefield, General Rajaxx preferred to stay away from the front lines, shouting orders loudly from a safe distance away from the enemy forces.

During the War of the Shifting Sand, Rajaxx saw the Night Elf commander, Fandral Staghelm as his own personal nemesis. Despite Rajaxx's numerical superiourity, Fandral had managed to bring the Qiraji advance to a sudden halt. Although Rajaxx was certain that, given time, he could win a war of attrition against the Night Elves and their allies, but the Twin Emperors were not so patient. They wanted results now, not later. So he set to work. General Rajaxx was able to identify Fandral's singular weakness: his love for his son, Valstann. Being a creature full of hate, malice, and violence, General Rejaxx knew exactly how to exploit that.

Staging an attack at the Night Elf village of Southwind, Rajaxx was able to lure out Valstann and capture him alive. Several days later, he brought the capture Valstann out in front of the Qiraji lines, and in full view of Fandral and the Night Elf army, personally tore him to pieces. Fandral was utterly broken by the sight of his son's death, and lost the will to fight. Without Fandral's leadership, the Night Elves were forced to retreat to Un'Goro, where the Qiraji dared not go.

Ultimately, the Night Elves were able to gain the support of the Bronze Dragonflight, after the Qiraji staged an ill-timed attack on their home, the Caverns of Time. With the support of the Bronze Dragons, and Fandral managing to pull himself back together, Rajaxx's forces were beaten back to Ahn'Qiraj. To add insult to injury, Fandral and the dragons cast some twisted magic to lock the gates and seal the Qiraji away forever.

Rajaxx longed for the day when the gates would be open once more and he could seek revenge against Fandral for the defeats he'd suffered at the archdruid's hands. Sadly for Rajaxx, Fandral really didn't see Rajaxx as a rival or hated enemy. Fandral preferred to deal with his memories of the War of the Shifting Sand the same way they'd dealt with the Qiraji: locking them away deep inside himself and throwing away the key.

Image

When the Gates of Ahn'Qiraj were opened once more, Rajaxx commanded his armies to go forth and fight the assembled armies of the Alliance and the Horde. Despite Rajaxx's best efforts, however, and the distinct lack of Fandral Staghelm, the Qiraji armies were broken and adventurers stormed Ahn'Qiraj. General Rajaxx was killed by adventurers when they stormed the city.

Now that we've left the Ruins of Ahn'Qiraj forever (the Temple is a different matter), it's time to travel to the other side of the map!

Image
"Fire at will!

Cannon Master Willey was a member of the Crimson Legion, an elite force of the Scarlet Crusade under the direct command of Grand Crusader Saidan Dathrohan. Additionally, Willey was also one of the Crusade's cannon experts. As a member of the Crimson Legion, Willey was part of the force defending the Scarlet Bastion, one of the few locations in Stratholme that had not been overrun by the Scourge.

Despite the efforts of adventurers, the Scourge, and even the Argent Dawn, the Scarlet Bastion remained securely under the control of the Scarlet Crusade. Their doom came in the form of the dreadlord, Balnazzar.

Image
"Fire at will!"

Following the fall of the Lich King, Balnazzar decided that the time for subterfuge was over and decided to amass his own army of loyal undead. So he slaughtered the remains of the Scarlet Crusade in the Eastern Plaguelands en mass and raised them from the dead as his own minions, naming them the Risen. Balnazzar was quite enthused to have the Cannon Master at his side, looking forward to the day when Willey would unleashed his cannons in his name. As such, he gave Willey the name Willey Hopebreaker. Despite being twisted into a hideous parody of his former existence, things are otherwise about the same.

It's back to Naxxramas for another round of Hearthstone!

Image
It's willing to devour anything that gets too close, living or undead.

Gluth was a massive plague dog that dwelt within Naxxramas. It possessed an insatiable hunger, and would happily devour anything it could. In order to keep it satisfied, it was said that they would feed Gluth an army of zombies daily.

Gluth was destroyed when a joint operation between the Scarlet Crusade and the Argent Dawn stormed the necropolis. He was reassembled and revived when Naxxramas left for Northrend, where it was destroyed by adventurers once again. Gluth has likely been revived once more, although considering its upkeep, it seems likely that Kel'thuzad will simply wait until its needed again. Besides, Kel'thuzad was always more of a cat person.

"Welcome to the future. A pity you are too late to stop it. No one can stop me now! Selama ashal'anore!"

Kael'thas Sunstrider was the son of Anasterian Sunstrider, the last King of Quel'thalas, and prince of Quel'thalas. During the Second and much of the Third War, Kael'thas was a member of the Six, the leading council of the Kirin Tor, and ruling body of the nation of Dalaran. It was in Dalaran that the first of the many crimes that Arthas Menethil commit occurred: he won the hand of Lady Jaina Proudmoore who Kael'thas totally had a huge crush on. UNFORGIVABLE.

Kael'thas remained in Dalaran for much of the Third War, until news of the Scourge attack on Quel'thalas, the destruction of Silvermoon, death of his father, and the corruption of the Sunwell reached them. Another unforgivable transgression against him committed by Arthas Menethil! Kael'thas, concerned for the fate of his people, abandoned Dalaran shortly before the Scourge showed up there, stormed the place, and summoned Archimonde who promptly wrecked the place.

Arriving in Quel'thalas, Kael'thas was able to rally the survivours and took charge of the situation. Realizing that the corrupted Sunwell was a serious risk to his people, Kael'thas destroyed it. While he solved the problem of his people dying and going mad by consuming tainted magic, he now had to deal with the problem of his people dying or going mad because of magic withdrawal. Kael'thas renamed his people the Blood Elves, in honour of those who had fallen to the Scourge. While Kael'thas, as heir to the throne of Quel'thalas, could have claimed the throne and title of King, he chose not to, styling himself as the Lord of the Blood Elves instead. He also named some guy to act as regent while he was away.

Realizing that his people needed allies to help them through these troubled times: the Scourge was still a serious threat and Arthas Menethil was still alive. Kael'thas reached out for help from his old allies: the remnants of the Alliance of Lordaeron. Unfortunately for Kael'thas, the highest ranked commander still alive in Lordaeron was Grand Marshal Garithos. Though competent, Garithos' demeanor and dim view on non-humans left much to be desired. Still, despite their mutual loathing, the Alliance remnants were successful in freeing Silverpine Forest and Dalaran from the Scourge. However, the relationship between Garithos and Kael'thas soon became quite tense, as Garithos becaming increasingly nervous of that naga witch Kael'thas kept hanging around with. Certain that treachery was afoot, Garithos promptly locked Kael'thas and his Blood Elves in the dungeons of Dalaran.

Image
Somewhat of a low point.

With some help from Lady Vashj, Kael'thas was able to escape the dungeons, and rescue his troops. Desperate for some way of escaping Garithos, and finding a way to feed his people's thirst for magic, Vashj offered him a solution to both: travel to Outland, and seek out her master, the former Night Elf, Illidan. Looking the best option of his choice of bad options, Kael'thas agreed. Making use of the portal Kel'thuzad had opened to summon Archimonde, Kael'thas, Lady Vashj and their Blood Elf and Naga forces were able to escape into Outland.

After helping Illidan with a pesky Night Elf Warden-shaped problem, Illidan was happy to recruit Kael'thas and his Blood Elves, and promised to teach them all sorts of nifty tricks for acquiring magic. Furthermore, Illidan hated Arthas just as much as he did. Truly, it was an alliance that would last the ages. Together, the Illidari took control of Outland, dethroning its current lord, the pit lord, Magtheridon, and secure the Black Temple for themselves. They were now the unchallenged masters of Outland, with a safe home for everyone, plenty of magic for all, and totally safe from Kil'jaeden ever finding Illidan and berating him for his failure to destroy the Lich King.

Naturally, that was when Kil'jaeden, full of fire and fury, showed up and asked Illidan why the Lich King was still not destroyed. Suitably inspired, they set to work. While they tried their best, and poured their hearts into it, their attempt to kill Arthas, destroy the Lich King and not earn Kil'jaeden's eternal ire failed. In defeat, they returned once more to Outland, where Illidan bunkered down and prepared for the worst the Burning Legion had to offer.

While Illidan prepared to go full out paranoid, Kael'thas turned his attention to his own projects: namely helping his people deal with their addiction to magic. While Illidan was quickly becoming a reclusive, paranoid madman atop the Black Temple, was true to his world, proved to be quite knowledgeable about magic, both arcane and fel, and gave Kael'thas the techniques he needed to sate his people's hunger. He sent a group of his followers back to Quel'thalas to help spread knowledge of these techniques. Kael'thas himself, however, chose to remain in Outland, certain that the shattered remnants of Draenor held secrets that could further help his people.

Image

Kael'thas' patience was rewarded when a fleet of five dimensional ships appeared in Netherstorm. Commanded by the Naaru, allies of the Draenei, they'd come to help them and fight the Burning Legion. Kael'thas and his forces were quick to seize control over the dimensional ships, and claimed the flagship, Tempest Keep, as his new headquarters. However, Draenei forces led by Velen the Prophet were able to reclaim one of the ships, the Exodar, and escaped with it to Azeroth. Despite Kael'thas efforts, he was unable to reclaim it. Not that it mattered, the Draenei crashed it into the side of a mountain anyway.

Even with just four out of five of his new dimensional ships, not to mention the naaru pilot, M'uru they'd captured, Kael'thas was feeling pretty good about himself. He had M'uru sent to Silvermoon, certain that the crystalline creature's light based magic would prove to be a powerful source of magic for his people. He then set about reverse engineering the naaru technologies, and set about building a series of manaforges throughout Netherstorm, and totally wiped out Kirin Tor village on his doorstep, 'cause who cares about old allies, right? Everything was going so well that he almost didn't care when he lost some of his best troops when they defected to the naaru and draenei at Shattrath instead of capturing the city as he'd ordered.

Mastering naaru technologies proved difficult, however, as did his ever growing thirst for fel magics. Weaknesses that Kil'jaeden was quick to exploit in Kael'thas so Blizzard could have an excuse to use him as a raid boss. Entering into an alliance with the Burning Legion, Kael'thas intended to drain the remaining magic of the shattered world of Draenor, and then bring it back with him to Azeroth to feed his people using Tempest Keep. It was the perfect plan until a bunch of adventurers stormed his magic flying sky keep and killed him. Or so they believed. Not even moments later, Kael'thas mocked the foolish heroes for thinking he was actually dead, and swore revenge on them, the naaru, Illidan, and pretty much anyone else who was listening. Openly declaring his allegiance to his new master, Kil'jaeden, Kael'thas warned of his master's impending arrival and that all would be doomed.

Image
"Don't look so smug! I know what you're thinking, but Tempest Keep was merely a set back."

So Kael'thas had a totally awesome plan to summon Kil'jaeden to Azeroth using the power of the reawakened Sunwell, and stole M'uru back from his own people in Silvermoon. Fel Blood Elves. Killed by agents of the Shattered Sun Offensive. The End.

Kael'thas, the Illidari in generally really, got a really raw deal in Burning Crusade. The reasons for us fighting them are tenuous at best, and Illidan and Kael'thas both got derailed largely to justify making them raid bosses. While Illidan's story arc was pretty much wrapped up in Frozen Throne, Kael'thas still had a lot of interesting stuff going for him before he got shoehorned into being crazy and evil. Did adventurers really kill him, or was he really killed by Blizzard first? You be the judge.

"VanCleef pay big for your heads!"

Rhahk'Zor was an ogre in the employ of the Defias Brotherhood. He acted as their foreman, overseeing various projects within the Deadmines. Additionally, Edwin VanCleef would also paid him handsomely for the heads of any intruders he delivered to him.

It's possible that Rhahk'Zor had been a member of Turok's band of ogres who had claimed the Deadmines as their hideout during the First War. He may have survived the group's destruction when Blackhand had them all killed after his daughter, Griselda, ran off with Turok. However, little of Rhahk'zor's past is actually known.

Rhahk'zor was killed by adventurers when they stormed the Deadmines in search of Edwin VanCleef. Stormwind pay big for VanCleef's head. When VanCleef's daughter, Vanessa VanCleef reformed the Defias Brotherhood and claimed the Deadmines for herself, she hired another ogre to replace Rhak'zor as foreman. His replacement, Glubtok, was an ogre mage with a natural talent for destruction.

They say no one ever sleeps in Dire Maul.

Image
Many Highborne spirits wander the former city of Eldre'Thalas, lashing out at the living.

Illyanna Ravenoak, and her pet bear, Ferra, wander the ruins of Eldre'Thalas in a cursed, undead existance. Once, Illyanna was one of the city's best hunters, having even earned accolades from the prince himself. However, the prince's plan to summon and bind a demon, and drain magic from it to fuel their needs and replace their reliance on the now destroyed Well of Eternity, had hit a few snags. Namely that the bindings were weakening, and the demon wasn't producing enough magic to keep everyone immortal. Prince Thortheldrin, ever pragmatic, had found a solution to both these problems: by killing off some of Eldre'Thalas' excess population, and sacrificing them to empower the bindings, there would be more magic for the surviving population! So, he ordered Illyana to track down and execute a few of her friends to help accomplish this. When she refused his orders, Prince Thortheldrin had her killed, and bound her soul to her corpse as a punishment, dooming her (and Ferra) to serve as undead protectors of the city forever. Also, he probably had her hunt down and kill her friends anyway.

Illyana was eventually killed by adventurers, and freed from her cursed existence. This party likely included a warlock looking to get their epic mount.

No one can fathom how black these deeps are.

Many underwater creatures took up residence in Blackfathom Deeps after the Great Sundering. Some still dwell there, unchanged by time.

Old Serra'kis is a mighty threshadon who once dwelt within the Forgotten Pool in Blackfathom Deeps. He has survived multiple attempts at his life, both by Twilight Hammer Cultists (who thought he might be tasty) and adventurers (who thought he might be full of loot). He was, however, eventually driven from his home by the Guardian of the Deep, a giant crab who was seeking a safe location to lay her eggs. Now, Old Serra'kos waits for the day when he might reclaim his ancient home.

I don't think I've ever fought this guy. I've only been to Blackfathom Deeps a handful of times, and I missed him each time. I guess he's akin to Rotgrip in that he was sort of a secret boss and very easy to miss.

The only time anyone ever discovered BFD was a place was when LFD came out. Then everyone failed at jumping platforms. Over and over and over. For years to come.
