Campaigns for SC1?
With the advent of Starcraft 2 came a revival of the custom campaign heyday... Not exactly.
Lately, I've been thinking about SC1 a lot and how there are a lot of things I didn't do a year or 2 back because I thought SC2 was going to blow SC1 away in an instant. Now that hasn't happened, and I'd like to know if you think there's still a "market" for SC1 campaigns?

I don't know about everybody else, but I would still love to play SC1 campaigns. If you wanna make one, go for it. I'm sure at least some of CC will play it. I sure will, I've been bored the past little while.

Re: Campaigns for SC1?
I would suggest that any remaining market for campaigns crafted on anything prior to SC2 will simply have to be exceptionally good to acquire any resulting coverage or interest by players. It would probably also involve a lot more work on the side of promoting the project in any possible manner.
That said, if you have a solid idea and a plan of attack and you're going to try and make a complete campaign I'd probably give it a look see. Go for it.
Without trying to incur the wrath of certain people on here though, recent Q&A releases from Blizzard have suggested there is going to be a lot more support towards, "loading linked maps/ campaign", size limits, and all that jazz.
Anyways, I wouldn't just rage quit and toss out any chance of having an opportunity to make something in SC2. Maybe just bide your time compiling important features like a solid plan.
Unfortunately it's probably going to be a patience game.

wrath incurred.
Don't put any substance into anything Blizzard says or any conjecture of certain fanboys until something actually happens. Remember Battle.net 2.0, how it was going to be a revolution in online gaming and interactivity? Yeah, about that...
At this point if you have no talent in SC1 I'd say go with sc2 though. If only because it will bitch slap you that much harder when you realize how much time it will take to do anything. The less one hit wonders the better!

Stop being so discouraging.
Regardless what you decide to do you will at the very least find a niche on the vast internets with people who will give it a thorough play through. Don't let Iskatumesk's jadedness put you down.

Yes, I believe there's still some interest in SC1 campaigns. I for one don't care if it's obsolete or whatever, I'm not done with it yet. Even if no one cared anymore at this point, if you're motivated enough to make a SC1 campaign you should go for it, regardless of other people's interest. IMO it's something you accomplish for yourself, the "market" is secondary.
On a side note, I really enjoyed your Dark Swarm campaign, Legion. It's one of the best out there for sure. I wish you made a sequel...

I'm just realistic. If you walk into this business expecting daisies and cheap hookers you're going to get eaten alive just like I did.

Re: Campaigns for SC1?
I gotta agree with Mesk on this, I don't see support for custom singleplayer campaigns as being particularly high on Blizzard's priority list. I'm willing to bet we won't see anything until sometime after Legacy of the Void comes out.
I think there's still an audience for SC1 campaigns. Although it's probably not huge. I'll admit, I've been toying with making an SC1 campaign again just for fun, seeing how I can't really do that in SC2.

Campaigns never had a big audience, don't fool yourself. But the thing about this audience is they don't care if it's sc1 or sc2. They just want a good story. That gives you, the developer, the freedom of choosing your best platform to make this on.

Re: Campaigns for SC1?
My current desktop can't even play starcraft 1 properly anymore.
If you develop for sc1, you're developing for people who can't afford a comp that can play sc2.
But you're also NOT developing for people that have moved on to sc2.
There are people that would like to see a campaign for sc2 in an alternate timeline... But there's a lot more challenges in the development (in some ways).

My heart says:
Yes, I think, that there is still a reason to invest time in the original StarCraft, because this living legend survived 12 fucking years down to the present day. And as long as places exist like campaigncreations.org, you have a platform to keep a project alive...
My brain says:
No, there is no longer any real "market" for campaigns, because with the arrival of StarCraft II the original StarCraft dies expectably every day a little bit more. Even the current operating systems begin to deny the work with that old lady.

As far as I care anyone who says they've "moved on" from one game to another are excluding user-made content for the simple fact that you cannot move on from user made content to user made content.

Re: Campaigns for SC1?
I tend to agree with your brain. I'm having problems returning to SC1 and enjoying custom campaigns Echoes of the Swarm because of the pathfinding issues, fixed low resolution and aging gameplay. The same problems that made even a huge and ambitious campaign such as LotC a chore to play, in a nutshell.Eredalis wrote:My heart says:

You kids and your graphics standards. You'll regret the death of sprite-based games just as I do... one day.

Re: Campaigns for SC1?
Hardly anyone who doesn't visit a starcraft map-making site will ever play a campaign. I'm sure if you made a campaign then a good amount of people would play.
