StarDraft and CWADs

Post by StarController »

Hi all, long time lurker first time poster. :)

I decided to download the Bob Levels and try them out, and I wanted to make sure I had everything i needed.
It turns out some of the bonus levels use a CWAD, and the readme said to use StarDraft to get it all up and running.  Since it appears StarDraft is old and outdated these days, How *should* one use a CWAD?

Any help would be appreciated :)
Thanks! --StarController

This could be quite the adventure for someone who doesn't know what he's doing.

CWAD's are very, very old. The new versions of starcraft don't support it and I'm not even sure if you can run Stardraft in XP or newer.

There was a program that converted cwd (if there's a cwd file I don't know, if not you might be screwed) into exe. I'm not sure where you can get this program or if it will function for you, though. I think it was called cwdtoexe by a guy named BlacKDicK or something hilarious like that. It may have also converted CWAD executables but I can't remember.

I haven't dealt with CWAD's for many, many years, but if I was to take a wild guess I'd say you're probably out of luck unless you have a CWD file and can find that converter.

You could also try opening the CWAD with winmpq. I don't know if that works, but if it does you might be in luck.

If you happen to be running something lower than Windows XP (big if) then you can also simply run the SECWAD.

A while ago I've extracted all files from the good old cwad archive of the Bob Levels, and converted them all into an up-to-date Win-MPQ archive and furthermore into an exe. I have upload the exe file onto my webspace, so you can easily download it...

The Bob Levels 2 -- SEMPQ

Click, play, enjoy!  ;)

Yes, the current version of WinMPQ can open those CWAD files.  lol, I thought I had mentioned it sometime at least to you.  It does not actually let you directly view the list of files or extract them; it only allows you to convert it to MPQ.  It can also open exe files from StarDraft and, IIRC, also StarGraft.  It does not current extract the StarGraft patch and put it into the converted MPQ, however.  I didn't consider that important because of being able to get the files when you run the exe, though.
Don't point that camera at me!

Yeah, but I'm old and senile and totally forget things. I'll try to remember it next time someone asks me about cwads, though... I've been asked quite a few times about those.
