Re: Filefront goes belly-up
Well, Dreamhost has been fairly good in that regard. Unless we're getting links every day from Blizzard's frontpage when SC2 comes out, we haven't even gotten close to slowing down the host server's maximum bandwidth.
Practically speaking, 3000 downloads of a 400 MB file a month isn't an issue as long as we don't exceed 300 downloads in an hour as part of the greater figure. If the bandwidth really gets hurt, we can always go for a VPS, which at $80 a month, is sustainable with a few dozen donations of $1 and $20 out of pocket monthly.

If they promised it... why?Desler wrote:Larger media can eat up a lot of transfer, and any host that promise unlimited or unmetered transfer will only indulge you for so long.Negi wrote: It costs like nothing for webspace/transfer. You people should stop being such cheap bastards.

There's a difference between unlimited and really unlimited. It means that a shared host will let you put through 100,000 downloads or more a month but they will shut you down if you get 10,000 in a day because it'll take out the server.

Actually, they just notify you and suggest personal servers. It's occurred.

And there was a great shout, as of a rushing gust of orgasmic gasps cut short by the vacuum of digital space.

Sadly, its not an april fools joke like the silly count down timer.IskatuMesk wrote: http://farewell.filefront.com/
Could be an elaborate April Fools (I expect Blizzard to toy with people's hearts about the sc2 beta personally), but it's a bit early.

Ziff Davis Media is primarily a business-to-business media company so it makes sense they'd try to get rid of excess online assets. In any case, Filefront lives on despite the economic downturn.
