Yeah, WC3 melee is pretty boring. TFT improved it quite a bit, but still not on par with BW.

SC had a fantastic melee mode though. Things such as M&M micro, Reaver + Shuttle and Muta raids were way too fun; the only race in SC2 that seems to have a somewhat complex unit structure is the Protoss, IMO, due to the role of their units. Protoss Gateway units seem cooler now with the Stalker and Immortal, and the Warp Prism sounds great as well. If the Reaver was to be brought back in, it'd add even more depth to them, especially with the more flexible shuttle.

Terran and Zerg look weird though, and other than the Viking, Reaper and the Queen, some other additions seem pretty bland. I agree with Mesk that the high risk units were damn interesting in SC (boo at Blizzard for removing the Scourge and the Reaver). I wish there were plenty of high damage units like the Tank, the Reaver and the Archon; as well as high damage spells like Psi Storm, Yamato Gun and Plague. Those made the awesome, gory battles of SC were dozens of units could die in a matter of seconds. I don't want to see Zerg just stepping aside and dying, I want to see them explode in several pieces like they did in SC1. Mummy-friendly my ass.  :P

Bear in mind though that Blizzard's games have always been vastly improved by their expansions, to the point that the vanilla games grew outdated and outclassed compared to them (Brood War, Lord of Destruction, Frozen Throne). So, while some things in SC2 might end up disappointing, we can always count on the two expansions to cover at least some of the mistakes. :D

And yeah, to us here in CC, the editor is what counts the most. The game is looking good in the visual department and we can try to emulate the more interesting SC units in our maps/campaigns, if anything. ;D

They should actually all be available in the SC2 editor,  every SC1 unit as well as all the removed ones from pre-alpha.

Negi's comment is true.. I'm sure it wont be long before there's an SC1 mod for SC2. Made by one of us. One of ten other mods about SC1 just like WC3's mods to convert it to SC.

Lol. That would be cool. We might even see some events from the books molded into campaigns.

Hopefully not since the books suck.

I've read two, can't remember which, but if they are considered canon I would slap metzen silly.

Get to work, Mesk.  Right now, it looks like book-cannon overrides game-cannon.  Colonel Duke, anyone?

They aren't official canon but are endorsed by Blizzard. The panels approved that with a lot of minor SC2 characters being from the books.

I just hope people aren't so intimidated like with WC3 and we'll see a healthy does of campaigns. :P  I'd love to see what the editor can do, especially given the units we will supposedly have at our disposal.

I'm also not feeling the current changes on the latest build, either.  It's like they're so focused on making the units unique and coming up with counters for each that some units just end up falling short.  So far, I'm saddened to see the Thor end up becoming a giant Goliath that repairs itself.

To be honest the wat Starcraft campaigns really got started was by someone that actually made a really good one, I recall the Antioch Chronicles. All we need are two or three projects, good ones, big ones, that are finished early and make people go 'I wanna do that'

I would totally pay for the SC1 campaigns in SC2.

I think I'm one of the very few people who NEVER played Antioch Chronicles, despite all the hype that it was given, especially when the number 2 came out.  NA2, EDAST, and Reclamation of Aiur were the first custom campaigns I've played, and since most of the campaigns I played were from CC in all its glory. >>

And given that we shall be seeing some of the old units make an appearance in SC2, I wouldn't be surprised if someone decided to actually create SC1 with SC2 itself. :P

I'm not a campaign player. The few campaigns I tried didn't hold my interest past five or ten minutes.

FK was probably the better campaign I played but I lost interest pretty fast, still.

Which isn't to say I'm a mod player, either; mods tend to hold my interest even less than campaigns do.

Actually, I can understand that Doack.  Well, not to speak badly of anyone else, but my campaigns at least had its own laundry list of stuff I intend to correct.  Poorly developed characters, dialogue that does just barely enough to advance the story, and one dimension plots are at the top of my list of things to fix.  A common thing I notice is that many stories people write for campaigns are very similar.  Besides the gameplay, the plot lines are going to be the things that set these apart.  Plots that go beyond just a cool war with some named heroes doing their thing are common enough.  I want something more.  Mystery, intrigue, drama, not just action and epic battles.
