THE WINDING ROAD, PART ONE

The engines of the vulture bike kicked up wind and dust, swirling it into a cloud that was ever-pervasive, spinning in miniature cyclones that crept behind the protective eyegear of the driver, merging with tears and sweat to create a rather unpleasant mixture. Katherine Logal tightened the throttle on the bike to approach a less-than-breakneck velocity, lifted her goggles, and wiped the dust from her eyes. She instinctively and paranoically checked her sideview mirrors to make sure nobody was following her. Nobody was.

With so much time spent battling the Zerg infestation on the world, things like basic colonial maintenance had fallen to the wayside. Normally the paved roads were kept clear and clean, even this far out between outposts, but now the road was a mess of dust, dried mud, tumbleweeds, and rhynadon droppings, and it took a keen eye like Logal's to discern where the road even lay on the ground. It was just as well that the Dominion didn't maintain this road, she thought to herself. Jack wasn't a commissioned officer anymore and couldn't use any influence to try and smooth things over. Goodenberg wasn't the vindictive kind and hadn't much seemed to care whether Logal even existed, but military regulations were law. Soldiers don't abandon their posts. Covert operatives with classified knowledge don't get to just up and run away. She was AWOL and it was only a matter of time before they started looking for her. She just hoped she could get offworld before they started looking.

Sneaking out in the middle of a full honors ceremony for Vertigo probably helped. Security was laxer than usual, not that it would have posed much of a problem for her, but as far as she knew, the only people even aware she was gone yet were Craig and Jack. If she kept up the pace she could get to a civilian port before sundown, maybe charter a shuttle.

A tingling at the base of her skull snapped her to attention. She'd never developed fully telepathic abilities, couldn't read minds, but she'd been able to hone what little empathic ability she did have into a sort of danger sense. It had come in quite handy when scouring for Zerg, as they set off klaxons in her head anytime they were near. But those nasty critters weren't the only things she'd had to fight in her career, so she knew how to latch onto thoughts of a harmful nature. So where was this danger-sense coming from?

She checked her mirrors again--nobody was following her from the road. Hmm. Maybe it was a false alarm. But the tingling persisted, and it was accompanied by a quiet high-pitched whining sound of a different frequency than the vulture she rode. She yanked hard on the steering wheel and spun her bike around.

High in the sky, trailing behind her by about 300 meters, was a wraith. Damn. Even if they didn't yet know she was AWOL, she was riding Dominion property, and spinning around to face the wraith before she was even contacted was probably not going to do wonders to prove her innocence. A light blinked on her dashboard, and the face of the pilot appeared on a tiny screen.

"Identify yourself," the pilot demanded.

Logal clenched her jaw shut, and tapped in a code on the keypad below the video screen. "Ghost business," she said. "Here's my clearance code. Disengage and resume your patrol."

"Shut down your engines and hold for code confirmation."

"That's a negative," she replied. "I am on a time-critical classified assignment. Disengage NOW."

The pilot paused. Ghosts were given a large berth in the military, but she was still on a bike that was not given mission clearance, and that was unusual even for a covert mission. After a moment, he replied "I'll just check for confirmation then," and the wraith pulled off pursuit.

"You do that," Logal answered, and shut off the screen. She loosened the throttle, charging forward at full speed toward the civilian outpost.

Well, there goes my head start, she thought.

Life of marine. Check out the campaign and the prequel Bootcamp. Good stuff. Which is why I'm really looking forward to this one. Gemini is a quiet one and then suddenly drops it on you.

Cool story, by the way. So you're going to extend your universe even further.

I can't believe, that there are still people out there, who do not know the masterpiece "Life of a Marine"...
It is without a doubt one of the very best Singleplayer RPG for StarCraft: Brood War, which contains an extremely cool soundtrack.

Krazy, you should as soon as possible check LoaM, you won't be disappointed.  8)

Are you implying that I'd be cooler if I were an elf with tits?
