Ghost has been officially axed.

Post by Whiplash! »

VideoGamer.com: On to Starcraft: Ghost. As a Blizzard fan and a console gamer, I'd love to one day see this game or perhaps something similar. Are the next-generation consoles the place for Blizzard's console game or are you guys waiting for even more powerful hardware to realise your vision?

FP: We're grateful that there's still a lot of support for and interest in StarCraft: Ghost, but we currently have no plans to continue its development on next-generation consoles.

Theres also something about a "Team 3" that is working on a project independent of SC2 and WoW. I wonder what project that could be, since its not ghost.

Uh, Diablo 3. It was WELL expected to have been announced already. Their staff is made up of mostly D2-style graphical staff.

Nothing new revealed there - the "Team 3" article from Gamasutra is from July and was already posted here with people raising the possibility of Diablo 3, and as for StarCraft: Ghost I think originally when they stopped work on it they may have said they'd assess whether it was doable on next-gen consoles, but it's been known for a long time that they had "no plans to continue its development on next-generation consoles".

Seems like a shame, Ghost could have been an interesting game, if only for the extra detail on events post-Brood War and for fleshing out the SC Universe alittle bit more.  On the same hand, alot of the 'OMG!  It's new a SC game!  I wanna know what happens after Brood War!' is gone with SC2 announced.

Oh, well.  Blizzard's love on long development times really didn't mesh well with the Console War.

Sorry but I have to correct the OP.

Ghost is not canned.  Rob Pardo said on August to Gamasutra they intend to work on Ghost.  All it takes is a Team able to take the game project.  Focus of the console deparment was moved to work on Starcraft 2 and Wrath of the Lich King.

I am surprised you didn't absorb what indirectly he meant.  Sure there is no plans for Console development.  He just now said no plans for Next-Gen Ghost.  To me what he is saying by not saying much is ... Ghost is coming to PC.

To be perfectly blunt I really don't care about Ghost anymore. If Blizzard is smart they ought to make everyone forget about its shameful existance.

Rob Pardo: And as far as Ghost goes, we love that game concept and we consciously said that we're putting it on indefinite hold. The game didn't get made because we didn't love the character and we didn't love the concept. It didn't get made because it wasn't coming together in the way we wanted it to and we wanted to focus on our other projects. As I said earlier, if we had a development team available and they had a passion to do Ghost, we'd probably let them do it. That's what it would take. --- Gamasutra, August 2007.

I paid no attention to Ghost the second they announced that there would be no PC version of it.

I think the core issue is, if Blizzard enters a genre, they want to dominate it (RTS, MMORPG).  But the FPS genre is by far the most competitive of them all.  I think it was just impossible with the team they had to create a FPS that would stand above others that were coming out.  Just look at all the recent releases, Call of Duty 4, Crysis.  Both revolutionary, and both light years ahead of Ghost.

I always had the impression that Ghost was 3rd person, and would be more in competition with games like Metal Gear Solid.  The same situation though, the MGS series would still be hard to top.

TF2 cannot compare to CoDs single player.
