Post by Jadefang »

THE ODYSSEY CAMPAIGN

Part 1: The Treasure of CSS Reliant

Body: Takes place just before Broodwar. During the downfall of the Confederation, an important strategic item was lost on board of the confederate cruiser "CSS Reliant". You are assuming the role of Captain Jean Aristide Broeque under the command of a terran fleet that tries to recover this item, "the treasure".  The search is not only opposed by Zerg who now occupy many of the potential locations of the lost cruiser, but also by a competing protoss fleet who got notice from that item and wants it for themselves.

Features: 9 missions, 7 outdoor, 2 indoor. In some of the missions you have superior firepower and numbers, but the enemy has a tactical advantage, requiring innovative maneuvering beyound the fast expansion, mass production, overrun enemy concept.

BACKGROUND AND MAIN CHARACTERS

BACKGROUND INFORMATION
Earth is devided.
The Cold war never came to an end, lasting for centuries. In this alternative timeline, Joseph McCarthy became President of the United States, and in light of the threat of communism spreading across the world, he assumed emergency powers in 1954. After disabling the constitution, he started a firm purge against everything he deemed communist, polarizing the entire world into two blocks. He made the US an aggressive military power, won the wars of containment in Korea and Vietnam. However, democracy and freedom were impaired. Especially after the victory in Vietnam, which was accompanied by a wide range of left wing protestors, the right to vote was limited and no longer open to everybody, the civilians, but rather only to the true citizens, who have shown their dedication to the matters of state affairs by military or public service. The East on the other hand, leaded by Moscow, was being "successfully contained", however also enabled to gain power and unite all those forces opposed to McCarthyism and the new order of the aggressive western capitalism. This setting even lasted longer than Earth making first contact with other species, and colonizing other worlds, and thus the iron curtain expanded throughout space. Each both West and East made these steps independently, and colonized other worlds in their liking. In 2018, the US Senator Dorian Routhe conducted the so-called 2nd Great Purge, and arrested tens of thousands of hackers, free minded thinkers, green environmentalists and other subversive elements. While a death penalty by the order of hundreds of thousands was simply not feasible, the decision was made to banish these humans into outer space via a large space transport ships, and they were never hear from again for centuries. However, 122 years later, when the newly founded United Star Alliance (as opposed to the Soviet Space Empire), people became aware that they not only got rid of the "undesirables", but also lost a major part of their cultural heritage. The most important document that was lost with the outcast was the TBCITW data disk. Even what the acronym stood for, is lost and remains unknown.
In the year 2484, however; a transmission from and the yet uncharted Koprulu sector was received, and it was, surprisingly, human in origin. Quickly, the assumption was made, that this transmission came from the previous undesirables. The content of the transmission was a distress call, to aid the "Confederation" against an insect like alien species, the ZERG, and against rebels that attacked them on their home planet. The United Star Alliance demanded that the data disk were sent, but the commander of the confederate ship, the CSS Reliant, offered the disks, realizing its value, only in return for an expeditionary fleet to aid the confederation against the struggle with the rebellion and the Zerg. Obviously, the Soviets got the distress call, too, and might be on the move to go to the Koprulu sector already. Therefore, the United Star Alliance lost no time, and assembled the QUEST FORCE under Admiral Nimitz. One ship of the Quest force is the USS Odyssey, which will be the main focus of this Campaign series.

MAIN CHARACTERS
Captain Jean Aristide Broeque
AGE: 31,
GENDER: MALE,
UNIT: MARINE
Place of Birth, Strasbourg, France
Captain Jean Broeque is an accomplished tactician after not only climbing the ranks from pioupiou onwards as marine soldier, but has acquired great knowledge on space fight and commandeering a space ship. He took over the Odyssey just 1 year ago in preparation of the TBCITW retrieval.

Lt. Jeanne De Caunes
Age: 27
GENDER FEMALE
PLACE OF BIRHT: Avignon, France
UNIT: GHOST
Jeanne De Caunes is a French special ops specialist, graduate of the "fantome" program. She has been fighting against the Venusians’ pirate combine prior to her recruitment into Captain Broeque's team 1.5 years ago. She admires Captain Broeque a lot and secretly hopes he would consider her for more than just his team mate, although she would not act on that feeling on her own.

Lt. Bertrand Auteuil
Age: 29
GENDER: MALE
PLACE OF BIRTH: St. Germain, France
UNIT: GHOST
Bertrand Auteuil is specialized on undercover ops and melee combat. Having undergone the "fantome" program, he is also telepathic and capable of creating his personal cloak field. He has been working in a unit specialized on counterintelligence and has detailed knowledge of soviet space craft technology and espionage. As the United Star Alliance was very concerned that the Soviet Star Empire might send their own expeditionary fleet to retrieve the TBCITW disks, he was asked to join and contribute with his expert knowledge on Soviet counterintelligence.

Dr.  Marcellin Brongniart
Age: 38
GENDER: Male
PLACE OF BIRTH: Quebec, Canada
UNIT: Scientist Vessel, Civilian
Marcellin Brongniart is an expert on nuclear fission, computer science, and microbiology. He also studied the history of Doran Routhe and is an expert on the Koprulu sector, which was the main reason why he was elected to be a member of Captain Broeque's team. Despite him having an arrogant academic attitude, he gets along very well with the arsonist Benoit as they share a compassion for anaerobe bacteriology.

Master Sgt. Benoit L'Allumeur
Age: 39
GENDER: Male
UNIT: Firebat
PLACE OF BIRTH: Dunkerque, France
Main weapon: Flame thrower.
Benoit L'Allumeur was convicted for arson and burning his ex-wife to death to spend 15 years in prison, but released early upon condition for him to join military service. He stayed in the army after his term was up, becoming an expert in chemicals, explosives and flame throwers. He refused a promotion to become officer so that he would be able to continue carrying a flame thrower in the first front line. He is very obsessed with using his flame thrower. He is working closely with Dr. Brongniart on culturing bacteria capable of negative phase fermentation, which would generate a volatile gas he named "pet de la mort" and the most effective incinerating agent known in all of space, which he wants to use for his flame thrower.

Sounds promising, man. French, are you? Or at least, you dug into the language to get such names...

I'm looking forward to this.

But if the campaign is like all on a ship then all the maps would be like on a space Platform or in an Installation, have you thought of having it this way or like the treasure falls down on a planet so there will be jungle/desert/badlands (etc.etc.) maps?
sorry if I now had showed like whats happening in your campaign btu I was only guessing that if it was going to be a planet map this is what would happend (the treasure falls down on a planet)
Good luck! ;D
I am confused... What race should I play as? Send a message of what u think and why...
Good luck in the Starcraft mini  campaign contest... :D

Actually I am not French. That friend of mine whom I gave the campaign as a present used the name "Captain Broeque" occasionally in our multiplayer games. I had some French in high school but it is all gone. But since he used this name I actually did "dig into the language"  to make it more authentic :)

Re: The Treasure of CSS Reliant BETA UPLOADED

Post by Thalraxal »

Just finished playing it.  Fun so far, I'm enjoying the treasure hunt idea :)

Mission 1:
Mission briefing: You're missing a 'display speaking portrait' on, uh... I forgot his name.  The guy who uses General Duke's portrait.

Nitpick: You might want to use the Fog of War editor and reveal the location of the Dominion Space Station, since the map's already balanced in favour of the player.

Mission 2:
Nitpick: Enable Shared Vision with your ally, it'll help alot.  Check on CC's main page, go to 'Programs' and grab a copy of X-tra Editor if you don't already have it.  Look for 'Run AI Script' and find 'Turn on Shared Vision with Player X' where X is equal to the player number of your ally.

Also: You have a huge level of power difference between all your heroes.  Captain Broeque is a virtual one man army, while Sgt. L'Allumeur's a comparative push-over.  You might want to think about rebalancing them.

General
Outside of Mission Briefings, use transmissions.  The Display Text/Speaking Portrait/Wait method can (and does) get messy.  Plus Display Texts only appear for 5 seconds, and you're fond of giving us multiple paragraphs.  If you need a sound, transmission.wav and ComBeep0.wav are popular choices.  I'm a fan of ComBeep0, which I've attached bellow.  Revan uploaded transmission.wav in Zilla-'s sequel to Resurgence entry.

Don't be afraid to break up some of the larger blocks of text into multiple trasmissions, it makes it easier to read.  Also, format your text.  I'm not as fanatical as some people around here are about, but it does make it look alot better.  Check here for details.

Thalraxal,

Thank you very much for your comments. They were very helpful.
In specific, the link for the text formatting was extremely good. This does indeed make a MAJOR difference.

I will work the missions over and incorporate these new concepts into the next missions....

Kind regards

You can use file sites for larger files, you need to find your own way to upload projects. All projects will be hosted on CC after the contest.

I played through all three, and I liked them. But I would like to say my problems, don't take them as criticism, those are just suggestions.

The good things: custom sounds. "Captain Dugalle" listening to French music and then a doorbell rings? And the other characters come in? Showing what do they think? That was certainly unique for a briefing, too bad that you had to remove the music file. Also, the French expressions were funny, but that's just because I'm also learning French and I could understood most of them. But...

Try to keep low on French words. The 3th map is still beta (I guess), so that's why it's full of French stuff. Some of the words can stay as they are, like Monsiur, Mademioselle, Bonjour. Everything else should be in English.

My other problem is not that big, it's about the terrain. Simply, it doesn't seem as "random" as it should be. There are 3 types of mineral fields, but you only use one and they are in an almost perfect order. Some of the doodads are just piled on each other, for example the 5 skeletons in the tar.

If you fix these, we can get a quality campaign 8)

Hi Revan,
Thank you for your comments.
Actually, leaving a large part of French in there was intentional. I also plan on a mission inside a Soviet Space ship with lots of Russian audio. The idea is that in order to enjoy the mission, it is not necessary to understand every single word, 90% will do. The rest is nothing important, just atmosphere. I hypothesize, that the fun factor might be even higher, if you do not understand absolutely everything. That's why I would like to transfer the beauty of these different languages into my storyline.

In addition, some of the terrain was also decorated intentionally. Remeber, that in the briefing of mission03 they said, that the tar lake next to New Hampton Roads is named "the five headed dragon pit"... When you fly over the skeleton the first time, Jeanne De Caunes will tell you that she thinks this creature, somewhat resembling a five headed dragon, is the reason why.

You are right, however, regarding the mining sites. That is something I should change in the later versions.

The biggest push at the moment is really the audio I want to include. I am trying to find solutions to the issue of copyrighted music, either get permission, or find other ways to make it legal. In addition to that, I am working on voice acting, and I am involving some friends of mine to help me with that.

My ultimate goal is to create a very atmospheric campaign telling an interesting story, and giving hours of fun to those who play it.
