BIO: At 46 years of age, Zathren was forty Aiur cycles younger than his mentor, Praetor Fenix of the Templar caste. Unfortunately, Zathren lacked the eloquence of speech, patience, and charisma of his mentor and would thus not follow in Fenix's footstep as a leader amongst the Khalai and future Steward of the Templar. The year, as of this writing, was 2166. Zathren was a warrior's warrior, obsessing upon battles long since won and battles to come. Every moment between battles was an opportunity to prepare for the next. Fenix took full advantage of of Zathren's bloodlust and trained him in the fine art of close quarter and extreme combat. For more than twenty Aiur cycles, Fenix refined Zathren's skills with a Zealot's blade. Fenix, destined to become the youngest Praetor in Protoss history was also among the youngest mentors in his peoples' history. Zathren indeed had the finest teacher he could have hoped for. In 2189, the Conclave (assembly of the Judicator Caste - then lead by Alyndrea) ordered Fenix to depart Aiur and investigate the loss of a small Protoss task force which scouted near the galactic core. Fearing the task force had been enveloped by the super massive black hole at the center galaxy's center, Fenix was to find any survivors and return them safely to Aiur. The High Templar and Executor, Tassadar, lead the rescue expedition with Fenix as his ground forces commander. Fenix, feeling that Zathren was not yet ready, forced him to remain behind. Within one a few months following their departure, the Conclave received a distress signal from the other side of the galaxy. The signal was badly garbled and was only able to reach Aiur by traveling through a stable wormhole, but the essence of the message was clear and irrefutable. An unknown species had been overrun by the Zerg and required assistance. Zathren saw this as an opportunity to at last prove himself to his mentor and to the Zealot caste-masters that he was ready to join the Protoss' fighting forces. Again, he was denied his opportunity as Judicator Drealan, one of the most venerable members of the Conclave, convinced Alyndrea and others that the Protoss could ill afford to devote so much effort to safeguarding and protecting 'helpless' species as it had over the centuries. Instead, Drealan argued, the species whose world was invaded must be allowed to evolve and endure on their own. Only then would natural selection be fulfilled. Zathren departed the capital to train further in his home city of Tarsus, pending Fenix' return. Zathren, over eager and volatile, expressed himself often by emotive excess, even if he was engaged in normal discussion. For this reason, Zathren ultimately found his place at the foremost point of any Protoss ground force. Better to have Zathren fighting the enemy than yelling in your mind, thought his commanders. And Zathren did prove himself as among the most effective warriors the Protoss had at their disposal. Character art by Freespace Films |
