[Sound] Trying to VA

Post by New-/Hydrolisk »

On and off in the last while, I've been thinking of/dabbling in voice acting. However, I didn't think I really had the voice for such things, so I waited. While I waited, I tried to practise different voices (not really different), mostly in growling/evil stuff. I've definitely gotten better, but I'm still miles behind some of the other stuff I find. And, my deepest growls still aren't very good.

Anyway, I took some old lines I wrote for a unit called the Kiar Craza (Killing Claw) and tried to voice them today. Afterwhich, I did some minor editing.

I wish to show the fruits of my efforts here, in hopes of acquiring more insight as to how I can better do everything.

Presently, here are some notes I have made:
-I'm basically a complete neophyte;
-I probably have a bad mic, but it's the best that I have presently (it's still really bad; it came with Rock Band lul);
-my sister was asleep, so I had to go into another room to record (which seems to have been a good thing, since the other room is all cushiony and carpeted and shit, which I read is supposed to be good because sound waves don't come bouncing back - however, I don't think I got good positioning in the room, thanks to the length of the cable for my mic);
-I didn't have a pop screen;
-I did a pretty bad job at holding the mic at a proper distance;
-I'm still a little sick, but this shouldn't have had much of an impact;
-MORE PLOSIVES PLEASE;
-I'm not sure what else.

Here are the lines I used.
Kiar Craza sounds

--

RDY:
The Killing Claw is here!

WAT:
Murder! Death! Kill!
My speed alone kills.
Set me loose!
[Scream.]

YES:
I shall strip the enemy of life!
Lacerate and eviscerate!
It shall be done!
With all due haste!

MAD:
Is it time yet to cut bodies yet?
I grow weary of this charade.
Hehehe, hehe, HAHA!
I will snatch your life away if you continue to hesitate!
-WAT:4 was terribly done. Sorry.
-MAD:3 was terribly done. Sorry. (I'm usually good at mad laughter.)

With no edits:
Kiar Craza Lines v1.0.flac.7z

With a few edits:
Kiar Craza Lines v1.1.flac.7z

Hopefully, I get better (skill-wise, health-wise).

- It's completely and wholly pointless to save unit responses as flac. Use ogg.
- A look at your unedited sound file shows enormous peak rapage. Turn down the volume of your mic significantly and you'll get far better quality out of it.
- I hear you fiddling with the mic during casting. Don't do that.
- You don't necessarily need a pop screen, I have one but I don't usually use it because I have no place to put it. Just don't speak directly into the mic with p sounds and control your air outtake. Okay I worded that terribly but you get the idea. Ultimatey it's still a good idea to get one.
- You pronounced eviscerate as evis-kerate. What?

Otherwise it's not a bad start and I could have use for this kind of a voice in the future. Keep practicing bro.

1) I thought flac was lossless or something. D: Okay, will do.
2) Okay. How would I go about doing this, though (the mic is a USB mic with no integrated volume control)? Should I just distance myself from the mic?
3) The mic is one of those handheld ones. ;_; Maybe I should get a stand?
4) Okay. I've been thinking of using something to improvise, specifically.
5) Wait, what? FFUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUU

Okay, will do.

Thanks for your post.

It is lossless but the source is not usually. It's a waste unless you're encoding something like 96k khz 1k+ kbps. And even then, games don't support it, so it's not worth it.

2.) Windows will have a sound panel in control panel depending on your OS that will let you dick around with the volume.
3.) yes, the less movement the better.
4.) I've heard nylon works but I dunno. Better off asking Maglok about that.

I have a popscreen set that has a nylon one (kinda like a stocking :P) and a metal one. Both work, but I prefer the metal for heftier and raspier voices, like Protoss. I tend to go for the nylon one for terrans.

I agree with get a stand. Things are godsends. Get a proper one while your at it, but your mic probably won't attach to a real one easily.

Shame on me, but I didn't use a popscreen or anything.

Was going for a snivelly-sounding character, or something. I don't think I managed too well with this.
