Debating this holds little value for me, so I'll just concede to Gnare.  It's important for humans at least, since we are social animals, to develop relationships outside of their family.  Ergo, I tend to lean on the side that incest, while purely possible and even acceptable in some other species, is not a good idea for humans.

I don't know for sure but I think some animal species might be inbreeding. Also..they might be inbreeding even in non-critical situations. Do not forget that many of the reasons why we humans don't inbreed are of cultural background.

Actually, I found it quite interesting why there is a genetical defect through inbreeding (at least for humans) since I can hardly see for what the nature has designed the defect. For what reason? ONly thing which comes up to my mind is that the food and popularity would have been gone off the rails.

@Marco: WEll, it could be argued that things are natural if they re-occur within a timestamp and repeat themselfes, which won't appeal to human cultures (mostly) since we are rather moving forward and not in a circle (this counts for the civilizations but not for the human things which are necessary surivive such as eating or breeding)

What? It's a byproduct of the way genetics works. Every cell has two copies of each gene, one from the mother and one from the father.

Many of the destructive gene mutations are recessive, meaning that both copies of the gene must have that variant to take effect. Inbreeding increases the chance that both copies will be the same, resulting in more destructive mutations being expressed.
